Fred stands by the stadium entrance and waits for him to come out. She knows she won’t be able to celebrate the win with him since she’s too young, but she still wants to tell him it was a good game. It’s something she does whenever there’s a home game and her parents let her drive up to Houston and Rice University. At first, they didn’t want to let her but she eventually talked them into it.
She was sure they knew about her crush on Nick Stokes, and she was sure they didn’t mind. Their moms had went to high school together and was best friends. Fred’s parents thought Nick was an upstanding young man and knew he would never do anything with their daughter. Even though Fred wished he would.
When the gate opens, Fred searches for him and when she sees them, she waves her hand. A blush creeps over her face when he moves toward her, a grin on his face.
“Hey, Fred,” he says. “See my homerun?”
“Uh huh. Best homerun I’ve ever seen,” Fred tells him.
He laughs at that and shakes his head. “You say that about all my homeruns,” Nick comments before his attention is pulled away by his girlfriend. “I gotta go. I’ll see you at the picnic on Saturday.”
“I’ll be there,” Fred says with a nervous giggle as Nick walks away and to his girlfriend. Fred looks the other girl over and sighs. She’ll never be as pretty as Nick’s girlfriend and Nick will notice her.
With a sigh, she starts to move but stops when she notices Nick’s baseball jersey on the ground. She picks it up and hurries after him. “Nick…your shirt!” she yells out as he’s stepping on the team bus.
“Keep it,” he says with a wink before disappearing up the bus steps.
“O-Okay,” Fred says as she hugs the jersey to her chest. She waves goodbye to him and gets in her daddy’s truck.
And, later that night, she sleeps in the jersey, while dreaming of the boy she knows will never love her back.
