Fred stepped out of the bathroom and walked into the other room. Wesley was sitting on the couch, a cloth to his head. She sighed and moved over to him and sat down beside him. “Let’s see it,” she said as Wesley pulled the cloth away. The gash on his forehead was deep and long. “You might need stitches.”

“Right,” Wesley said as he dropped his hands to his lap. “How’s Nick? Is he going to be all right?”

She took a deep breath and started to pull what she needed out of the first aid kit. “I don’t know. He let me fix his cut but then he said he needed some time alone. I really didn’t want this to happen. I wanted to ease him into this,” she said as she pulled out a bottle of iodine.

The week before, Wesley and Giles had called Fred, asking if it was all right for a quick visit. She was happy to hear from them since they were the ones who’d gotten her out of Pylea. When they brought her back, they took care of her and when she remembered Nick, they called him and helped the both of them adjust to each other again.

Fred knew if she hadn’t seen Wesley and Giles being loving toward each other, she would’ve forgotten Nick. But, every time she saw them holding hands or kissing, she felt as if she were missing something. Then, one day, she suddenly remembered what she’d had with Nick before she had gotten lost and within a week, they were reunited.

She had told Nick about her life in Pylea and he understood vampires and demon existed, but had never seen one. That was until that night.

The four of them had decided to take in a movie, followed by dinner. After the movie, they decided to take a quick shortcut through a back road. None of them expected to run into a large demon, but they had. Giles and Wesley charged forward, while Fred looked for something to help them. Nick, on the other hand, just stood there, in shock. If Fred hadn’t had noticed and pushed him out of the way, the demon would’ve killed him, instead of just giving him a scratch across the arm.

Now, he refused to speak to her and was hiding in their bedroom.

“He’ll be okay,” Fred said, as she sterilized a needle. “He’s just a little shell-shocked. I just wish things would’ve happened differently, y’know.”

“I’m sure he’ll come around, Fred,” Wesley said, with a small smile.

Nick sunk down on the bed and sighed. He eyed the bandage on his arm and was tempted to pull it off, just to make sure the scratch hadn’t mutilated into something bad. But, he didn’t. Fred had said it would be okay and he needed to believe her. He knew he was probably overreacting, but, he couldn’t help it. He had known demons had existed, yet, he didn’t think he would be attacked by one.

He had spent the last year, protecting Fred from anything that might threaten to take her away again. But, when it mattered the most, he couldn’t protect her from a monster. Instead, she’d protected him and that didn’t sit well with Nick. What sort of man lets their girlfriend kill the demon?

There was a knock on the door and Nick looked toward it, hoping it wasn’t Fred. He wasn’t upset with her - he just felt ashamed over his actions. Plus, he was a little frightened at the thought of demons roaming around Vegas.

“Come in,” he finally said, knowing he couldn’t hide forever.

When the door opened and Giles walked in, Nick’s eyebrows rose. He figured Giles would be out in the living room, attending to Wesley. Maybe they were used to all of this and knew the other didn’t need to be coddled.

“Fred’s putting stitches in Wesley’s wound,” Giles said as he stepped in and closed the door behind him. “I’ve never been good with stitches, especially when it comes to Wesley. Something about using a needle, and thread, on a loved one…it’s never sat well with me.” He paused and looked Nick over. “I thought perhaps we could have a bit of a chat.”

“Nah, I’m alright,” Nick said as he ran his fingers through his hair. “I’ve seen worse things.”

Giles smiled and nodded his. He slipped his hands into the pockets of his trousers and leaned against the wall. “I remember the first time I saw a real demon. I believe I was around thirteen or so. It was quite an experience,” he commented.

Nick looked over at him and sighed. “Did it try to kill the woman you love? Did you just stand there, like a complete idiot, and do nothing?” he asked.

The other man merely shook his head. “I hadn’t discovered girls yet,” he said before stepping further in the room. “I think what you need to understand, Nick, is Fred can take care of herself. When I first met Wesley, he was rather naïve about the world around him. I wanted to protect him, and still do, but he can take care of himself. Instead of me being his protector, we’ve become a team. I think that’s something you need to do with Fred.”

Nick looked over at him, pondering his words. He’d made a promise to Fred and said he’d always be there for her. He wasn’t there for her that night and it made him feel like he’d broken his word to her. “I just want to protect her. I can’t lose her again,” he quietly said.

“Perhaps instead of standing in front of her, trying to shield her from the things she has already seen, you should stand by her side and fight with her. This won’t be the last time you encounter a demon, especially now that you’ve seen one,” Giles pointed out before he moved to the door. He opened it and paused for a brief moment before looking at Nick again. “It’ll be hard at first, but I’m rather sure it’ll work on in the end.”

All Nick could do was nod as he watched the other man slip out of the room.

“There. You’re all fixed,” Fred said as she put a bandage over Wesley’s wound. She then rooted through the first aid kit and pulled out two painkillers she’d gotten from the hospital during a recent visit. She handed them to him along with a glass of water.

“Thank you,” Wesley gratefully said before downing the pills.

Both of them turned their heads when Giles walked into the room. He gave both of them a smile before motioning toward Wesley. “I think I can take over from here. Why don’t you check on Nick?” he suggested before sitting on the other side of Wesley.

Fred chewed on her bottom lip, her eyes ticking toward the hallway. She didn’t know if Nick would want to speak to her, but she knew they would have to sooner or later - after all, they did share a bedroom. She stood from the couch and walked toward the bedroom door, not knowing if she should knock or not.

Taking a deep breath, she pushed the door open and give Nick a small smile. “Hey you,” she quietly said as she shut the door behind her. “How’s the scratch?”

“Hey,” Nick said as he returned her smile. “It’s fine. Doesn’t hurt anymore. You were always good with fixin’ people up.”

Her smile grew and she looked down at the floor. “I’m sorry about what happened,” she said before looking up at him with hooded eyes. “I never wanted--.”

“It’s alright, Fred. It wasn’t your fault. I just…maybe you could teach me how to fight demons?” he asked, remembering Giles’ words. “All I know how to do is shoot a gun.”

Fred looked up and grinned at him. “I can do that,” she said as she moved toward him. She carefully wrapped her arms around him and laid her head on his chest. “Y’know, you can still protect me, right?”

“I know, but I want us to protect each other,” Nick said as he laid a kiss on the top of her head. “Deal?”

Fred nodded her head and looked up at him, her eyes filled with love. “Deal,” she whispered before kissing him.
