I adore this thing & have used it so very many times! It is definitely a helper to Mom's and to working women everywhere!
During the evening, I would slice up veggies & meat - usually during commercial breaks. :)
The next morning, I dump everything needed into the crock pot, turn onto Low, and then leave for 8-9 hours.
When I get home in the evening, tired & cold, I walk into a warm house that smells of yumminess. Dinner's done. The pot worked while I did.
Although I never got to read much of it, I thoroughly enjoyed the cookbook: "A Man, A Can, and A Plan." We bought it for my brother-in-law when he moved out on his own. It's a man-based cookbook that has some rather nice meals that aren't pre-made, just sorta pre-pre-made. They don't require a lot of fancy footwork. They make use of a lot of canned vegetables, but they still tasted rather yummy.
I try to keep fresh veggies in the fridge and pasta & rice in the cabinets, plus a variety of bottled sauces: Mexican, Chinese, Thai, Italian, etc.
And, when the spirit DOES NOT move me for cooking, I keep an emergency frozen pizza in the freezer.
