stuff I need? who knows. Whatever I'm in the mood for that season/year/month/hour. I try to keep basic baking supplies on hand, and lots of pasta type things. Non-perishable(ish) things are a necessity for when I go 'Hrm, something like *this* would be interesting tonight'. Which is frequent.
Basic cooking supplies... Good Pots & Pans (bare minimum: Saucepot, Frying pan, cookie sheet, 'casserole' dish - I prefer rectangular glass) and Knives. Agreed, ditto, etc. Absolutely a MUST.
My wish list is freaking insane, though, I miss my baking, and my grandmother has a 'baking cabinet' ... there's a name for it besides that which I forget, and I'm always jealous of it. :)
During the summer I do about 1/3 of my cooking either over fire or over grill. I plan to build a solar oven in the next year or two as well, since I miss my baking but can't deal with adding heat all summer long. :P
*My Xmas request had my mom freaking out this year. I told her I wanted an apple slicer. It's $35, plus shipping. *sigh* She was still a bit stunned when I told her I wasn't asking for the next step up, at over $120. *sigh* But peeled and cored apples at more than 10 a minute with a hand crank? Goddamn, that's awesome. *sigh*
You should go look here for 'old fashioned' kitchen stuff - for certain basics, the newfangled crap isn't any kind of improvement. --> http://www.lehmans.com/
