Why Pole?

I've gotten some mixed reactions to the fact that I'm taking pole dancing at Pilates Plus. You know me, I'm not one to hide my hobbies, especially one I'm enjoying. I've gotten those goofy leers, 'ooo... pole dancing, private showing, haha', but thankfully those have been very few. I've gotten some double takes. I've mostly gotten... not outright disgust, but those kinda, 'oh, ok, whatever floats your boat' with a couple funny looks. One person commented that it was just a crazy fad workout, and another gave me the impression that it was demeaning myself to be taking it. So I kinda wanted to explain why I and my pole sisters are doing it.

I of course can't speak for everyone, just those in my class. My class is a great group of women, all ages, our instructor is wonderful and fun, and we can just cut loose, bust it out and have a great time. It's, like, theraputic and there's a sisterhood there. We encourage each other and we strive to have a great, hard, fun workout. I've never been big on girl time, but I really love what we've got there.

I'm not doing this for anyone else. There are no private viewings planned, and if you *could* see us it's not all that sexy. We're bruised, we're sore, we're a bit clumsy (well, *I* am, a couple of the girls could have a new career lined up ;)) and we're beat up. But I'm doing this for myself, you know? I'm doing this cause I HATE working out, so I have to find fun ways to disguise it. Belly dancing does that for me too, disguises working out behind a fantastically fun facade. And using my upper arms and my abs to swing around a pole is both terribly fun and a great workout. I do it cause it's an awesome release in a week of tough vet cases and baby care. I go cause it's fun to be social, trying these new moves out and learning with these awesome women. I go cause growing stronger each class, achieving new things and being able to do spins I could not do a couple weeks earlier is satisfying.

Belly dance is far sexier to me than pole class ;).

It might be a fad, but I think it's one that's going to be around for a while, and I'm going to enjoy it while I can!! Ok. I hope that made sense. That's all. Carry on.
