From my 10th grade humanities textbook: "Oleg, however, swore by his weapons and the pagan gods of thunder and cattle rather than a Christian god."
I never understood why this was relevant -- it's a level of detail way, way beyond the rest of the textbook, to the point that I found its inexplicability hilarious at the time and memorable even now. I mean, who cares -- this guy made a treaty, and that's really the end of it: we don't need to know what he swore by or even what color socks he was wearing at the time. And yet, it's that kind of odd little detail that's always so fascinating -- what did Oleg swear by, and why was it unusual enough to note? (Who was Kern of Hed...?)
So, what did I google today? Yep. Not in a very dedicated way, unfortunately: I realized that I know almost nothing about the general history of Russia. (Or other places, but, you know, this is the one that came up.) I could spend a long time on this one, so at the moment I'm only kindof prodding the tip of the iceberg to test for polar bears.
Also, I just found out, completely by accident, that Yahoo Mail beta will generate random, funny subject lines if you click on the "subject" button. Some of them made me laugh my ass off. Mainly because of the juxtaposition (I seem to like that word lately) with the content of the email.
Pirates? What, you're waiting to hear me rant about Pirates? Pfft! That's SO last Saturday.
