Before our chickens started laying, I spent a lot (a LOT) of time reading about different things related to laying, just so I knew about some of the more odd things that might happen. One of those odd things is the laying of little tiny eggs, usually called "fairy eggs" or "witch eggs" or "fart eggs."
One of the girls (I believe it was Badass) left us a fairy egg yesterday. Here it is with a couple of yesterday's other eggs (all small/medium size eggs, so still smaller than your average store-bought egg):
Tonight when N got home from work I decided I would open the fairy egg. Normally inside they are all whites. Not this one!
It was really like a little tiny egg, yolk and all.
The shell was rough instead of smooth. The egg whites were really thick.
Everything I read said that usually when a fairy egg appears, it's a young girl (yes) or an older one where a piece of reproductive tract detaches and tricks the hen's body into thinking it's a yolk.
The odd eggs are interesting and probably not a problem, but I'm keeping an eye on the girls. Badass didn't lay today and I think she was the one who left the fairy egg. My guess is she'll lay tomorrow morning after skipping today, but we'll see.
The weather is so miserable here (February in Seattle, not like I was expecting something different), rainy and windy. The chickens haven't had enough time outside of the run thanks to the weather (they are ok in some rain being jungle fowl but wind is another story). Poor ladies! They are so chatty.
