Some CDs I ordered arrived yesterday. I didn't post yesterday because it was late by the time I finished listening to them. ^^;
androp's album from last year, one and zero, and Perfume's new album LEVEL 3. On the one and zero case, it's interesting how they repeated the title over the whole cover and on the CD itself, but made it so that you could only see all the text if you tilt it to catch the light right.
And the Perfume album comes in the most glaringly bright case. xD I think I might talk about the whole case, cover, and how it's put together in a separate post (because I love this stuff).
So Enter the Sphere seems to be the full song from what was played on the Perfume Global website. It's very nice and works well as an intro. I love good intro/opening songs on albums. The Spring of Life album mix is kind of, more of everything. More intro, a bit more instrumental added in. It's a nice remix, but not too different from the single version. The Magic of Love album mix sounds the most different from the single version out of the remixes on this album. It's almost like a whole new song with the same lyrics. I really love the concept of 「恋の調味料」. xD Seasonings for love. It's so cute.
I think that Clockwork is a really fitting song for Perfume. They have this image of dancing so perfectly in sync that they're like robots and they actually appear as robots in some of their music videos, and so many of their songs have lyrics like this about just going through the motions of life. When they put the songs and the dances and either the music videos or the production for their lives together, it creates such a full deep message. Each one individually already says a lot, but put it together and it's amazing. From the first time I listened to the radio rip of 1mm, it blew me away.
Mirai no Museum kind of stands out as being different from the other songs on this album. I think Perfume has mentioned before that Nakata's lyrics are usually not straightforwardly cheerful or optimistic, like there's always both sadness and joy, or the feeling that something's lacking in life. I think this is a big part of how Mirai no Museum is different from their usual songs, because, being a song for a children's movie, it is straightforwardly optimistic. I think Mirai no Museum does its job, and represents part of Perfume's success as a group.
I was surprised when I listened to Party Maker, because it ended up being the part designed for the CM spot plus what almost sounded like a completely different dance song. xD I think it fits as a "party song" though, in as far as I would totally play it at a dance party. It's almost like a remix of a song that was never a full song on its own in a away. I didn't know what to think of the sound of Furikaeru to Iru yo at the beginning of the song, but I think it builds well. I think combined with the meaning of the lyrics it has a strange hopeless feeling to it, like I was watching something about depression. It's hard to describe what this song makes me feel.
And then comes the B-side block: Point, Daijobanai, and Handy Man. Since I hadn't bought the Mirai no Museum or Magic of Love singles, this combination of B-sides on the album ended up working out well for me. I still really love the ethereal feel of Point. For both Daijobanai and Handy Man, the vocals have a nice, sharp rhythm to them. I think Point and Handy Man make for good contrasting songs, since Point is so light and Handy Man feels much heavier.
I felt like there were several songs on this album that went a little more on the electronic side of music than the pop side, and Sleeping Beauty is one of those songs. Parts of it remind me of Butterfly. I feel like the Spending all my time remix is a fairly typical remix for Nakata, like it makes it feel a bit more electronic and adds some more to the instrumentals. I think I was hoping for a lot of change or additions for the Spending ally my time remix and didn't get quite as much as I wanted, but Spending all my time is a song that had to grow on me a lot to begin with.
The lyrics of Dream Land made me think of Computer City. Although Dream Land and Computer City represent two different genres, they both have an idea of a utopian world created by people that ends up being more harmful than helpful to its inhabitants.
Up until now, Game has been my favorite Perfume album. I liked the overall sound and feel of it and liked each of the songs in Game. Triangle and JPN kind of had their ups and downs. There were some songs I really liked and some that didn't do much for me. For JPN, I really liked the single songs for it, but I felt like the album songs were a little lacking. Then, with Love the World and its Nakata-is-lazy remixes, I was a little concerned about whether he would do something like that again, but I think the remixes of single songs on LEVEL 3 really worked. I really love all of the new songs for this album, too. Overall, I think LEVEL 3 is really solid. I think it could become my favorite Perfume album.
