20 favorite movies of the decade

Dec 09, 2009 21:44

Can't believe I'm done! It took me FOREVER, but I did it! Prepare yourself for A LOT of gushing. This list could probably have been twice as long, needless to say, I LOVE MOVIES. And the last decade obviously produced som seriously awesome shit. You will also notice that my taste is very random and wide. You will find everything from comedies, to heavy dramas, to animations. I don't discriminate any genres. :) Hope you enjoy this as much as I enjoyed making it, and hopefully there's a few you haven't seen, and that I might give you a few tips. ♥

HONORABLE MENTIONS

The Assasination of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford // Half Nelson // Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind // Palindromes // Closer
Big Fish // Atonement // Juno // Little Children // The Believer
Lord of the Rings // The Two Towers // The Return of the King // The Good Girl // Crazy Beautiful

In the order of the year they were released:

Released: 2001
Story: The film tells the story of an aspiring actress named Betty Elms, newly arrived in Los Angeles, California,
who meets and befriends an amnesiac hiding in her aunt's apartment.
Why I love it: I was in total shock the first time I saw it. I had to watch again just a few hours later.
Still to this day, after watching it at least 3 times more, the movie still amazes me. It's absolutely genious.
The cinematography, the music, the insane script, it's all just pure magic.

Released: 2001
Story: It tells the story of a young British poet/writer, Christian, who falls in love
with the star of the Moulin Rouge, cabaret actress and courtesan Satine.
Why I love it: Well, in my world it's pretty much impossible not to love it. The colors, the music (srsly, folks!),
and Nicole can do no wrong in my book. She's absolutely stunning in this picture, well, as always.

Released: 2001
Story: Donnie Darko, a mentally disturbed teenager, appears to suffer from a variety of symptoms.
One night, Donnie sleepwalks and meets Frank, a man in a menacing rabbit costume.
Frank tells him that in 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes and 12 seconds, the world will end.
Why I love it: Like with Mulholland Drive, this film just screwed with my head like it's never been screwed before.
I don't think I've even been sucked in to a movie as much as I was when I saw DD. And I have to admit, I don't fully understand it yet.

Released: 2001
Story: It tells the story of a shy waitress, who decides to change the lives of those around her for the better,
while struggling with her own isolation.
Why I love it: The colors, first of all. And the humour. And that I recognize a lot of myself in Amélie, at least her sadness.
I think it's hard for anyone to watch this movie without falling for her, and the movie itself.

Released: 2002/2003
Story: The plot focuses on three women of different generations
whose lives are interconnected by the novel Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf.
Among them are Clarissa Vaughan, a New Yorker preparing an award party
for her AIDS-stricken long-time friend and poet, Richard in 2001,
Laura Brown, a pregnant 1950s California housewife with a young boy and an unhappy marriage,
and Virginia Woolf herself in 1920s England, who is struggling with depression and mental illness whilst trying to write her novel.
Why I love it: So powerful. So heartbreaking. A well deserved Oscar to Nicole, for sure.
All of these women are in my top 10 actresses of all time, so this movie was bound to work for me.

Released: 2003
Story: When his only friend dies, a man born with dwarfism moves to rural New Jersey to live a life of solitude,
only to meet a chatty hot dog vendor and a woman dealing with her own personal loss.
Why I love it: It's the little stories that takes the biggest place in my heart.
It's the quietness, the unexpected friendships, the lonliness... I think everyone should watch this movie.
The End.

Released: 2003
Story: Based on the life of Aileen Wuornos, a Daytona Beach prostitute who became a serial killer.
Why I love it: Probably one of the most well deserved academy awards EVER, IMO, to Charlize Theron.
Her work in this movie is just fan-frickin'-tastic. You can't watch this movie without feeling like crap,
which I love. ;) And how often do you find yourself sympathizing with a serial killer?

Released: 2003
Story: A freak accident brings together a critically ill mathematician, a grieving mother and a born-again ex-con.
Why I love it: Just as the previous movie, I just love movies that makes me feel like crap.
The most useless movies are the ones that make you feel indifferent. This one is the total opposite of that.
Naomi and Sean are both in my top 20 favorite actors/actresses list of all time, so yeah.
Incredible movie.

Released: 2004
Story: A listless and alienated teenager decides to help his new friend
win the class presidency in their small western high school,
while he must deal with his bizarre family life back home.
Why I love it: Guh, just so much love.
Vote for Pedro!

Released: 2004
Story: A teenage hustler and a young man obsessed with alien abductions cross paths,
together discovering a horrible, liberating truth.
Why I love it: In the same category as Monster and 21 grams, literally a feel crap movie.
But it also has that indie vibe, and some really memorable scenes.
I will never forget that opening, with the cereal raining over his head.

Released: 2004
Story: A quietly troubled young man returns home for his mother's funeral after being estranged from his family for a decade.
There he makes some life changing decisions, and meets a girl that shows him what life's really about.
Why I love it: The little stories, remember? First of all I adore Zach Braff, even tho this part is completely different from JD.
And Portman have never taken a single wrong step in her career, as far as I'm concerned.
And this movie made me discover so much lovely music.

Released: 2004
Story: It's the 1940s and a poor and passionate young man falls in love
with a rich young woman and gives her a sense of freedom.
Their story is narrated from the present day by an elderly man, telling the tale to a fellow patient.
Why I love it: Yeah, I think we all know the answer to this. McGosling forever ♥.

Released: 2004
Story: The dramatization of a motorcycle road trip Che Guevara went on in his youth that showed him his life's calling.
Why I love it: I just stumbled upon it late one evening, and I just got stuck in front of the tv screen.
The story, the script and off course Gael, just totally sucked me in. A magical story.

Released: 2004/2005
Story: Several stories interweave during two days in Los Angeles involving a collection of inter-related characters...
Why I love it: Yep, another Feel Crap Movie. I'm sensing a theme. LOL. No, but srsly.
This movie shows us what prejudice can do to people, and that we all have these thoughts.
And the cast is unexpected, and brilliant.

Released: 2005
Story: The film focuses on Cash's younger life, his romance with June Carter,
and his ascent to the country music scene, with material taken from his autobiographies.
Why I love it: The chemistry between Johnny and June is out of this world.
And all hats off to Reese and Jaquin for singing all of the songs themselves, and for being brilliant at it!
I'm so thankfull to this movie for introducing one of the best musiscians there ever were to me.

Released: 2005
Story: Based on the true childhood experiences of Noah Baumbach and his brother,
The Squid and the Whale tells the touching story of two young boys dealing with their parents divorce in Brooklyn in the 1980's.
Why I love it: Such a simple and common story, yet such a big and suprising movie.

Released: 2005
Story: Based on the Jane Austen novel of the same name.
It's a classic tale of love and misunderstanding which unfolds
in class-conscious England near the close of the 18th century.
Why I love it: First of all, the cinematography. It blows me away, every time.
And second, it's a beautiful, classic lovestory.

Released: 2005
Story: Based on the 'E. Annie Proulx' story about a forbidden and
secretive relationship between two cowboys and their lives over the years.
Why I love it: Utterly heartbreaking, and beautiful. It's Epic.

Released: 2006
Story: A story about a troubled boy growing up in England, set in 1983.
He comes across a few skinheads on his way home from school, after a fight.
They become his new best friends, even like family.
Why I love it: It just feels so raw and pure. A movie like no other.
It almost feels like a documentary, in a good way.

Released: 2009
Story: A tale of friendship between two unlikely pen pals:
Mary, a lonely, eight-year-old girl living in the suburbs of Melbourne,
and Max, a forty-four-year old, severely obese man living in New York.
Why I love it: Probably my favorite movie this year. It's about solitude, isolation, love and most of all; friendship.
A work of art.
Watch it. NOW.

Thank you so much for taking the time to check this out! It means a lot.
And as always, comments = ♥. :)
