Strategies of Attack Interlude

Nov 04, 2004 22:10

I wrote this before the Writer's Block actually - but also before the computer died and I got sick then everything else - some of the lists I was posting this story to don't exist anymore. Previous parts of Strategies of Attack are on my website. This interlude happens just after Cupid and Strife work together on Autolycus' punishment and is in Cupid's P.O.V.

By the way this interlude is dedicated to Aurora. Hope you're still out there, your questions got me to put this one together.

For those of you not familiar with the story there is slash, only implied in this story and it is a crossover between Buffy and Xena, begun in 1999 and will be finished damn it if it kills me!

Thanks: To Aurora for all your questions, they got me thinking.
Disclaimers: Other people own them all (Sob!) They ain't mine, they were never mine, but the plot is mine and if you try to rip it off I will send my attack squad of rabid teddybears and my flock of Outer Mongolian Vampire Skunks after you! Thank you to everyone who discussed what Xander's future godhood could be.

Arriving back at his temple Cupid snarled and fell forward onto a bunch of pillows, frowning ferociously.

"Gaahh! I hate him!" he exclaimed, hitting a cushion in anger.

"You know, if you want Bliss to have a little more self control and not give into temper tantrums, maybe it would be a good idea if you did the same? Just a suggestion."

"Aaah! Don't do that!" Cupid exclaimed, as he stood to glare at his wife. No, his ex-wife. "What are you doing here?" He said grumpily.

"Hello? I came to talk to you about Bliss? Remember?" She folded her arms and gave him a Look. Cupid was convinced there was a conspiracy somewhere that taught all females how to do it.

"Uhhh, yeah. Sorry. It's just that he makes me so mad!" Psyche raised a brow and sighed, before conjuring up a chair and sitting. Cupid frowned at the chair than at her.

"Do you know how many backaches I got from not having the right support? Now which he is it this time? Strife? Your father? Or is it your new found brother?"

"Xander! Dad's now talking about getting him special training with Hecate as it seems he has a lot of potential!"

"Well that's good! It means he will adjust much faster to life here."

"Well he seems to have adjusted just fine already!" Cupid said as he sat down in another chair he conjured next to Psyche who looked amused.

"Isn't it great? Everyone likes him, he's such a nice boy. And Strife says he's done really great in his training and your father has been telling everyone how he can't wait for it to be finished so he can give him his godhood."

"Yeah. It's just swell." Cupid sounded more as if he wanted to kill Xander than be glad for him.

"Cupid, we are friends right? I mean, yeah, Exes and all, but that was a spell and it was definitely the right thing to separate afterwards. And we both love Bliss a lot."

"Yes. Yes we do. I don't think Mum will ever forgive you though. Why?"

"If I got close to someone, really close, and wanted to marry them, would you be upset? Or glad that I'm moving on, because we still care for each other and want the best for each other?" Cupid's eyes widened and he frowned for a second before he smiled and picked Psyche up, swinging her around the room.

"You've met someone? That's great! Who is it? It better not be Apollo though, because he's a jerk and he really is worse than Granddad..." laughing, she hit her ex husband.

"Put me down stupid! There is no one! Well, not really. So you wouldn't have a problem with me doing that?"

"Of course not!"

"What about if Bliss decided to call him Daddy as well as you?" Cupid frowned

"I wouldn't like that, but, at his age, it would be easier for him."

"And if your best friend found another good friend and wasn't spending as much time with you?"

"Uhhh..."

"How would you feel if Bliss died? Only he hadn't died but you only found out twenty years later? Sure, you had other children but for a while wouldn't you want to spend all your time with Bliss to get to know him?"

"Psyche..."

"And what if you were upset about not spending as much time with your best friend as you have just come to realise you love him and haven't had a chance to say anything because your brother turned up?" Cupid stared at her.

"Your good. For being a Goddess only a few years you do it well." She smirked and it reminded Cupid of another reason they had divorced. He wanted to hit her.

"Well, for one thing, I was married to you and I have always been able to figure you out. For another, hello? Goddess of the Mind here. Of course I know what's behind your behavior. So now you know what are you going to do about it?"

"Okay, I am jealous. But why should I do anything about it? He comes here and gets it all handed to him on a platter! Dad's never paid me that much attention and..." Psyche angrily interrupted him.

"Were you even listening just now?! He's trying to make up for lost time! I wouldn't have thought I had to explain to a Love God that his love for you is the same as before! Get a clue! And before you carry on thinking Xander has it easy at all, maybe you should actually get to know him a little, before deciding you know all about him!" Psyche gave Cupid an evil look and then disappeared in a flash of light blue sparkles and butterflies.

Staring into space, Cupid sat down and actually thought about what he had been doing. Psyche had never been this angry with him before, and she was never angry at all without good cause. What had he done?

An hour later he came to the conclusion he had been acting like a spoilt brat. Xander had tried quite a few times to be friendly. Strife had tried to get him to do so as well, and he had just, been a shit. Well, that was going to change.

Cupid was going to go see his brother and apologise. He didn't really want to repeat history with himself and Xander as his Dad and Uncle Hercules, that was just dumb.

End

This is all part of the plot, guys, I couldn't have Cupid just change without a reason, could I?

And yeah, my Psyche is nice - the reason Aphrodite refers to Bliss as being the only good thing to come out of their marriage is, one, she never liked her in the first place and it was only at the extreme she gave Psyche her godhood. Two, they divorced and Dite is convinced Psyche broke Cupid's heart, even though they parted amicably, to protect Bliss from the arguments. Three, you think Ares is going to argue with her over this? He's War, not stupid. He knows better than to interfere with a protective mother.
