I've had so much fun watching this vid. I tend to favor Scully, but a good Mulder vid can always bring me around. Something I love about S1 is that we can take it as seriously or as non-seriously as we want to, and either way feels true to the story. Your vid works with that. It's fun and cute, but it doesn't seem to be spoofing the source. There is a darker element to the vid, but it's not the emotional focus. It's cynicism meets silliness meets the sexy-cuteness of S1 Fox Mulder.
I love the whole extended comparison of the FBI to high school - particularly the section of the second verse that sets up Colton and Mulder's old profiler pal as peers, Mulder's superiors taking on an almost teacher-ish vibe, and Mulder as the socially dejected individualist kid.
I'm not sure if this will make sense, but I get a slightly meta vibe from this vid. By this I mean, the more involved in fandom (and the more well-versed in fanon) you are, the more fun and endearing I think the vid will be. Certainly you couldn't watch this vid having only seen S1 and still have the same appreciation for it. You have to have the nostalgia, and the love of the characters in their 'youth', and an understanding of how fandom sees Mulder.
A few of my favorite moments:
"the drugs never work" - I like how the song kicks up here, and the clip mirrors that with more on-screen action.
"they've got methods of keeping you clean" - Apartment trashing! love the way you've cut it together so we basically see him turn over his entire apartment in three seconds.
"they're gonna rip up your heads" - Fenig caught in the beam of alien light. An excellent clip to match the lyric with.
"darken your clothes" - Mulder in a suit and shades, looking less than enthusiastic to be sitting around in a public place in the middle of the day. Hee!
"oh, yeah" - Pilot Mulder shouting at the sky. Wow, perfect clip/lyric moment FTW.
"strike a violent pose" (the third repeat) - Love the first clip of mulder spinning around, aiming his gun wildly, looking a little unhinged.
The vid ends really well too. It's bothersome when vids end too suddenly, or end on a clip that has no apparent reason for being the last clip. This was a good ending. Frustrated Mulder having turned his apartment upside down searching for bugs sums up the overall theme of the vid really well.
I want to give you feedback for Glycerine as well, and hopefully give astartexx some feedback too, for her most recent XF vids. I'm just not sure when I'll get to it. In the mean time, I just wanted to say that this vidding project is awesome, and I really hope you keep going with it, regardless of the fact that the majority of the fandom seems to be anti-feedback when it comes to XF vids or something.
Thank you, wow. It's taken me sometime to take in it all. Also it makes me watch the video several times, to look at what you saw in the video.
So your right, I think, if I understood you point properly. I came at this video with the POV that the other seasons don't exist yet. So Mulder was up left open for more fanon interpretation. (It's hard for me because I started with season 3 and went backwards, way back when) So from there Mulder really doesn't trust anyone, not even Scully really. I wanted to capture that without foreshadowing to much. Easy since there was only the a little bit of "ghost Samantha" and no abduction scene. S1 Mulder is paranoid and we don't know he has a good reason yet.
High School: As Astarte said to me while we were vidding, In S1 they actually have friends outside of each other, never ending well. Mulder used to get the strangest looks in s1, but I used the scene with his friend in two ways. I don't know why but the hug always gives me the feeling of a prelude to a "fuck you". That guy only went to Mulder to use him. But CSM and Skinner are the principles office.
I'm glad you liked it, when I first thought of this song with the X-Files scenes just came at me. And I know what you mean about endings. I always like to hold something back, some vidders like to start strong and then the end is just and after thought, where I can I try to hold stuff back. I never want to just fizzle out.
again thanks for the feedback. Makes my day. We're still going at it but Astarte has to have a job, damn it. So basically I'm almost ready to go on S5 and she has only just chosen her s4 song. I'm used to getting less feedback, it would be nice if there was a LJ "like" button though. I tend to assume only Astarte likes my videos. That or check out how many hits it gets on my webstats. I can't wait the hear what you thought about Glycerine, several times I thought I was just chasing a crazy idea.
