Coraline is film a that uses wonderfully complex stop-motion animation to tell a fantastic fairytale myth. After coming into my first viewing with high expectations the movie itself still managed to fly well above them. It contained so many layers of imagery that I feel like I need to see it again, at least twice to have a chance at grasping it all.
The movie is simply gorgeous. Even the scenes that shows the 'drab and ordinary' real world of the story are a sight to behold. And the scenes that depict the supernatural world are mesmerizingly otherworldly. If you enjoy beauty then you are going to love this movie. The level of craftsmanship, the attention to detail and the diversity of style kept everyone in the audience enthralled.
The choice of stop-motion animation is the key to everything in this film. It is difficult to imagine the project could succeed so well in any other format. The solidity of the forms lends an amazing gravity to the production that is impossible to create in CG animation. You constantly feel that if only you were able to just reach into the screen then you could joyfully touch everything. That enduring sensation of tactile existence is very pleasing.
If you do not see this one in the theater then you are cheating yourself out of a visually stunning experience that has a very good heart.
