Newton once said wisely that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. This statement holds true in most aspects of life. It has shown up throughout history beyond its basic applications to physics. "An eye for an eye," it could be said. However, the USA has never really abided by this law of nature. When action or force is exerted toward us, we waste no time in exerting the opposite force, but it is rarely equal. I understand that we have suffered terribly. 9/11 brought with it terrible flashbacks of Pearl Harbor; but it would be unwise for us not to learn from our mistakes. Our response in August of 1945 was effective, but in ending that conflict we ended the lives of hundreds of thousands of human beings, most of which were innocent civilians. Our ability to strap on blinders and label all those people who look like the enemy as enemies is primitive and dangerous. Now, in a time when history is threatening to repeat itself, I beg of you: Think of the past. Think of the poor women and children that suffered in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Think of the people who continue to suffer now from the extended effects of exposure to radiation. And think of all of those civilians-men, women, and children alike-who will suffer in now if history repeats itself. I make no effort to excuse the actions of those who have wronged us; they are murderers and deserve to be treated as such. All I ask is that our ideals of "innocent until proven guilty" are not tossed aside in hopes of a quick solution to a problem that cannot be simply blown away. The children, the women, the innocent people of Iran have done nothing to deserve the mass genocide that nuclear weaponry produces. We have always spoken out against such practices. I ask you, how is our genocide different than any other that has taken place in history? When is genocide the answer?
