Fanfic Recap 2017

Dec 31, 2017 16:59

I'm planning to make one for the podfics I recorded as well, but there are 11 podfics in my drafts on AO3 waiting to be posted for ITPE, which means I'm gonna hold off with this post until they're published, even if that's not today.

So, in the meantime, here's my AO3. I combined the two memes I did last year into one big post, fyi. The individual entries from January this year re: 2016 can be found here, here, and here.

What's your first and second most common work ratings? Any surprises?

Most common: General Audiences (20)
Second most common: Explicit (13)

Still not really surprised. While I tend to go for higher ratings when reading, I do have a bunch of older fics (and more recent ones) that never made it above G because they might just be deleted scenes/bonus material, or truly gen fics.

What's your most common archive warning? Least common? Do you consider yourself an adventurous writer?

Most common: No Archive Warnings Apply. (36)
Least common: Underage (1)

Neither of those are surprising. The Underage Warning only applies to one fic in the Road to Nowhere verse, No One Hates Me Like I Do. I don't actually consider myself adventurous, but I did stretch my wings this year with Road of Ruins.

How many fics have you written in each relationship category? Is this more accidental, or do you have preferences?

M/M: 30
Gen: 10
Multi: 2
F/F: 1
F/M: 1

Still definitely a preference, but considering that last year I only wrote for three categories, and this year we have five, this is definitely an improvement, and indicative of me stretching my wings further.

hat are your top 4 fandoms by numbers? Are you still active in any of them, and do you tend to migrate a lot?

Merlin (TV): 24, still active, but might change?
Sherlock (TV): 7, no longer active, still trying hard to forget I ever was xD
Leverage: 6, no longer active, might go back one day?
Supernatural (RPF): 2, no longer active and no desire to go back

I definitely intend to expand my horizon next year and add some more fandoms to it.

What are your top 4 character tags? Does this match how you feel about the characters, or are you puzzled?

Percival (Merlin) (6)
Lancelot (Merlin) (6)
Morgana (Merlin) (6)
Uther Pendragon (Merlin) (5)

So, these are definitely mostly side-characters, because I don't tag for characters that are part of a tagged ship. And, tbf, the main reason these guys are in here is because I gave them speaking roles in my recent fics, mostly Road of Ruins.

What are your top 2 most used additional tags, and your bottom 2? What would happen if you combined all 4 of these into a fic?

Most used: AU - Modern Setting (11) ; Blow Jobs (5)
Least used: Pining (4) ; AU - Magic (3)

Isn't that, like, every other story I write? XD No, it actually isn't, but it's exactly what I like, tbh.

How many WIPs do you have currently running on AO3? Any you don't plan on finishing?

I never post WiPs. I've started and discontinued a bunch of fics that I've got saved on my hard drive (2 Harry Potter, a few Narnia), and I've got a list with two dozen ideas for new stories that might see the light of day some day, but I never post WIPs.

Total Stories Published: 15*
Total Words Published: 183,957 words
Average Words Per Story: 12,264
Shortest Story: No One Hates Me Like I Do - a Road of Ruins extra, 944 words, Explicit (for violence)
Longest: Road of Ruins 72,389 words, Explicit (for violence and sex)

*Not counting anything that’s bonus material/behind the scenes things, or art posts. Also not counting podfic, etc. since they’re under a different pseudonym from my writing name.

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted? I wrote way more. I participated in Pornalot, I wrote three fics for auction winners (only two published), I wrote two fics that weren’t for any kind of fest (one fairy tale fusion, one FMA crack fic), and then I went and had two ideas for holiday stories this year and wrote those as well (one Rom-Com, one gen fic). At most, I thought, I’d write Reel, ACBB, and something for the holidays. Not… this much.

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write most? Arthur/Merlin again. It’s really not a surprise because this year seems to have been all about getting the stories out of my system.

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January? Probably Fullmetal Alchemist. I didn’t think my side-obsession would turn into fanfic quite so soon.

Did you take any writing risks this year? Sort of? I did go for Pornalot, which I didn’t think I’d be able to do, but then I even received a lot of votes, which was all kinds of an amazing ego boost. I also didn’t think I’d do quite so well on the auction pieces, tbh. I put myself under additional pressure with those, and it worked out, miraculously.

Do you have any fanfic or general writing goals for the new year? Well, I do want to write a specific FMA fic, and maybe even a Hockey RPF fic (I know, shoot me), and there’s a large HP project I’ve had in mind for years. I might do ACBB again, but I’m really not sure about it at this point (for various and slightly complicated reasons that mostly boil down to me having unpopular opinions about BNFs). I don’t expect to write as much as I did this year again, tbh.

From the past year of writing, what was your…

Best story of this year: Road of Ruins - It challenged me the most, but was also rewarding in its own way even if the feedback for it is by far not what I had hoped.

Most popular story of this year: Going by Kudos, it’s Inkling, with 642 kudos. (Also my most popular fic overall.)

Personal favorite: No Winter Lasts Forever, this year’s holiday RomCom. I’m so pleased with how the plot worked out, and that I finished it in time.

Most under-appreciated: This is purely personal perception but there’s three: Road of Ruins, sadly. It’s probably because it’s such a specific fusion, and there’s a lot of violence in it that people don’t like it more or haven’t even read it. It’s funny that in the months it’s been up it got less kudos than any of the auction pieces I published in November got within a week.
Bishoujo Senshi Hagane no Renkinjutsushi has only 11 kudos, which I attribute to the fact that it’s niche interest, rated G, has no pairing, and is pure crack.
What nonsense! is my other holiday fic, it’s Uther-centric redemption gen fic based on A Christmas Carol by Dickens - and it has 12 kudos.

Most fun to write: Definitely Bishoujo Senshi Hagane no Renkinjutsushi. It’s a magical girl AU of FMA which is pure crack. I love it.

Story with the single sexiest moment: I think my favourite in that regard is all of Worship, which I wrote for Pornalot.

Most "ha ha, I can’t believe I wrote this" story: I mean, in a way that’s all of Road of Ruins. There’s a lot of icky stuff in that verse and not all of it was easy to write. It’s also kind of What nonsense! because it’s Uther-centric gen fic. I mean… what?

Most challenging to write: Road of Ruins, hands down. Purely action-driven road movie adventures are hard and I don’t know how people write this stuff constantly.

Biggest disappointment: Road of Ruins. Not the story itself, because I’m super proud of it, and everything whimsy and I have done with it. It’s all that I wanted it to be and more. I’m disappointed that not many more people seem to think so. It’s especially disheartening because the 114 kudos it has are out of almost 3,600 hits. I guess people stopped reading in the middle, or just hit it to get to whimsy’s art?

Favourite character to write: Still Arthur. I relate to him a lot, I suppose, and it’s easier for me to get inside his head. Writing a bunch of different characters for Road of Ruins was definitely challenging and interesting, though.

Favorite opening lines: There once lived a king and a queen in a beautiful country that stretched far and wide. from A Prince’s Tale

Favourite closing lines: Magic is alive, and with it, Albion. from Road of Ruins

Other favourite lines: “Merlin Emmerson, neonatal surgeon, and--" he furrows his brow, apparently thinking hard. “Drooling narcoleptic zombie," he finally adds.
Arthur laughs, and takes Emmerson’s hand. “Arthur Pendragon, actor, and self-absorbed wanker," he returns.
Emmerson doesn’t so much as flinch. “Maybe less self-absorbed," he concedes. “Definitely a wanker though."
From Clickbait

Most telling fic: Any in which there are blowjobs. I MEAN: I don’t know. There’s one I wrote but didn’t publish yet that was going to be my answer for this question, so now I’m left with no answer XD

** I just realised now that on the stats page, it doesn’t show how many kudos/hits/etc you earned in that year, it just shows you how many kudos/hits/etc a work POSTED in that year has earned since you last checked. Which means unless you keep your own yearly stats somewhere, you won’t know how many kudos/hits/etc. You’ve actually gained since the last year. Don’t let me go off on a rant about this again.

[1] Leaving out bonus materials and any content that isn't actual fiction. I did create an alternate pseudonym for podfics, etc. though, so the data should be more accurate.

Re: Top 10 by Hits: Christmas Holidays has been pushed to last place, where, last year, it was second to last. I’m hoping that the Sherlock fics will be mostly gone from the list by next year XD There’s already one less on the list than last year. However, no fics aside from that fandom, and BBC’s Merlin are left on it, where last year I still had two other fandoms on it (Leverage, and Cabin Pressure). However, I am surprised that Christmas Holidays had so many hits already last year. I posted this year’s RomCom earlier and it’s got only 100 Kudos - which is almost 1,000 less than the Holidays had in a similar timeframe.

Re: Top 10 by Kudos: While it’s not what I would hope for from readers (if you compare kudos to hits), it’s still a surprise how active and willing to give feedback Merlin fandom is.

Re: Top 10 by Bookmarks: I find it interesting that the Sherlock fic actually lost some bookmarks. I wonder if that’s because people are leaving fandom now…

Re: Top 10 by Comments: I chose not to list them as Top 10 by Comment Threads like I did last year, because while that’s certainly a thing I can check on the stats page of AO3, it’s not really helpful to every day fic searches on AO3, since you can only sort by comments, not comment threads when you search and filter fic.
I find it interesting that Inkling, which is my most popular fic EVER, has so many hits and kudos, but only a fraction of these people have left comments.

Re: Top 10 by Word Count: I left out the Illustrated version of Standing Right in Front of You because it would’ve been 2nd place and it’s the same fic as the Text Only Version, just more image-heavy and a lot of the words on images instead. So, you know. Slightly changing the stats. That's still 4 new stories on that list, which means I produced four fics with high(ish) word counts this year, and I'm really proud of that mileage.
