Fanfic recap 2016

Jan 08, 2017 10:56

polomonkey did it, and apparently merlin_writers inspired it last year, so here we are. Given that I've published a few things this year, I thought this might be fun! I might do an altered version for the podfics I put out last year :D

Total Stories Written: 4
Total Words Written: 111,575
Average Words Per Story: 27.893 (data severely skewed)
Shortest Story: Us Against the World (381 words)
Longest: Standing Right in Front of You (78,020 words)

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted? Definitely more than expected - considering that I expected only to be writing the ACBB.

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write most? Merlin. I only wrote for Merlin, I've got to say, and all stories had main pairing Merlin/Arthur

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January? None, I have to say. I knew that if I were going to write in 2016, it would be for Merlin.

Did you take any writing risks this year? Well, I participated in ACBB, which was a risk in itself because I'm notoriously never finishing anything. The Christmas fic was another risk. To be honest, almost every project I start is a risk of me not finishing, so....

Do you have any fanfic or general writing goals for the new year? Yes! I'm finishing up my reel_merlin fic, and then I intend to get an early start on aftercamlann since I'm already pre-matched with an artist and what to get going with it! I foresee another long one ;_;

From the past year of writing, what was your...

Best story of this year: I've got to say my ACBB, Standing Right in Front of You. It's the longest thing I've ever written, and I'm immensely proud of it. The reactions have been amazing as well!

Most popular story of this year: Standing Right in Front of You - Illustrated Version has the most hits, and the most kudos.

Personal favorite: SRiFoY ranks high up there, although I really like Christmas Holidays Aren't What They Used To Be as well since it's a movie fusion/au of one of my favourite movies, and I've been dying to write my own version for a while.

Most under-appreciated: It's sadly the Christmas fic. It's got almost a thousand hits, but only 34 kudos. There are a few comments on it, which is nice, but overall it's gotten almost no response. IDK if that's because I posted it on Christmas Eve day or because people just didn't like it :(

Most fun to write: Wrong Number, a short story for coinelot (a convention I co-hosted/co-organised last year).

Story with the single sexiest moment: Since the Christmas fic is the only story that has explicit sex in it, I'd say that one. Merlin and Arthur do it up against a wall ;)

Most "holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story: Nope, none there. The dirty-wrong things are kept hidden safely on my hard drive never to be shared ... at least not under my well-known username ;)

Most challenging to write: Both the Christmas fic and the ACBB were hard for me, because they required a lot of planning, organising and rmemebering what I'd already established XD I've had a few times where I was close to just giving it up and chucking it all in the wastebin.

Biggest disappointment: Coming back to the Christmas fic. Responses are just ... not forthcoming, and I'm worried it's because no one liked the story.

Favorite character to write: I enjoy writing from Arthur's POV most. I've done it for almost every story ever and will most likely continue to do so. Part of why that is is because Arthur's my favourite, but also because the show is from Merlin's POV, and I enjoy exploring Arthur's side of things.

Favorite opening lines: “I don’t think you realise how severe this is,” Arthur shouts angrily into his phone. “I’m locked out of my flat and I’ve got an important meeting to prepare. If I don’t get back in there in the next hour, my company is going to lose millions.” from Wrong Number. It just ... establishes what a prat Arthur can be :)

Favorite closing lines: It’s not just a good year. It’s going to be a good life. from Standing Right ...

Other favorite lines: [after noticing that Arthur cleaned Gwen's entire house before leaving] Either he wanted to be nice, or he had a lot of evidence to destroy, Gwen thinks, and hopes to God it’ll forever be Schroedinger’s cat to her. from Christmas Holidays Aren't What They Used To Be

Most telling fic: The ACBB. It has all the things I love in a fic: long, a lot of angst and hurt/comfort, (hopefully) humour, and "unusual" side pairings.
