I think it rather depends on why you need to.

it's a long story. a lot of grief + trouble + pain between us. kind of a betrayal, too.

Forgive him. Let it heal, let go of how much it hurts, do it yourself and do it for yourself and do it alone. Then, darling, you don't need him back to make not having him stop hurting, and forgiveness doesn't mean forgetting.
