Si Wang-mu had been supposed to go home to her parents for a short visit today.
And, in fact, she had managed to get out the door and on the road, despite Qing Jao waking up at some point in the very early morning before the sun was up with a break through which had turned into an episode that lasted until past dawn. She'd wanted to stay with Qing Jao, who was visibly wobbly, but Qing Jao had insisted she go, and so had Master Han, and then she'd had to argue them out of sending guards with her without seeming to argue, and then the cook had tried to send one of the scullery maids along to carry the food the cook was sending with her and dodging that one had needed even more tact, especially as she quite liked the girl -
Which explains why she looks a bit bruised and worn about the eyes and is carrying a large sack. It does not explain what she's doing in the middle of a carnival, instead of where she is meant to be, and is fairly sure she was just an instant ago, in the middle of a country road.
Being of a practical turn of mind, Wang-mu swings to the side to pick up a stick, and proceeds to thoughtfully poke at an elephant ear cart.
