Thinking of nothing, and the shooting stars

Normally at about this time she would have been singing with her sisters and turning in their slow, stately dance. Her plans for the night had not included getting hit with a gaudy piece of jewelry and tumbling down the long miles to earth. Nor had they included an ankle that felt either sprained or broken. And they definitely didn’t add in ( Read more... )

"Haven't been, couldn't say." Christie is so very helpful except when he isn't. He doesn't know what she is other than not human so for now (at least, could change on a dime really) he's willing to talk to her with the minimal of malice. "Do you think there might be a party? Tea? I do love a right proper tea."

Yvaine startles and turns, brows drawing together. "I don't see any party, and I certainly don't intend to throw one." She pushes a length of silvery white hair out of her face and stares at the stranger. "What is this place?"

"It's not Hell." He'll stare right back, you're welcome. "This is the agora. What are you?"

"The agora? Which? We're not in Greece, are we?" It certainly doesn't look like Greece, but perhaps she fell further than she thought. "I'm a star. What are you, then?" Not who, but what. Since apparently it mattered.

Star. That's interesting. He's never met one of those before. "The only one here and there's no grease about." Christie, stop it. That's never cute or endearing. "We're in Xanadu."

He debates how to answer her last question, he's certainly not telling her the truth. "I'm a bother." Quite.

She chooses to ignore that first comment, because it makes very little sense other than confirming that she's alone. "Xanadu? I'm not familiar with it." Not as a real place, certainly.

His last statement earns a slight smile, despite her still-throbbing ankle. "As distinct from a nuisance or a bore?"

"I can be the former, I'm not the latter." No, Christie at least always manages to entertain himself--that much is true.

"It's a place where other places meet. That's the simplest way to describe it." He debates mentioning roller skates and Olivia Newton John but refrains. He's being good today.

"More of a pest than a plague." She's certainly entertained, at least for the moment.

His explanation may be simple but it's still confusing. "So I'm not the only one who's wandered here by accident?"
