To Combat other's opinions with my vast amounts of useless knowledge...psychoticvirginJune 23 2004, 20:39:42 UTC
Love is far too simple of a word for the feeling. That's why the English language, in part, sucks. The Greeks have FOUR different words for love.
Eros-- Is sexual or lustful love. Love exists in all parts of affection. Even a prostitute gives away apart of him/herself when they do 'things' with others. Tis why the majority of them are on drugs. To escape the realities of their demise.
Agape-- Is cherishing love. When the lust has left, and when you become older, this is the love that remains to be found. It can also mean unconditional love (you don't love for yourself, you love for the other person). This is what many gay relationships do not possess. Men find it hard to surpass the eros stage, women are the counter balance to a man's sexual 'anxieties'.
And by protecting the sanctity of marriage, Bush means the religious aspect of it. Marriage is, afterall, religious thing. The problem lies within civil liberties (tax cuts and such). But the government isn't willing to accept gay couples.. as couples, so they don't recieve the benefits that normal families do. There are always acceptions to rules, but for the most part, gay relationships don't last beyond the eros stage. How many sane gay men to you find over the age of 50 or 60? yeah...
the other two types of love...
Phillia-- Is the love between friends (friendly love).
Storge-- Is Familial love. Like the relation between the parents and their children. That's why when you ask your mom or dad if they love their spouse or you more, they reply "it's a different kind of love".
And I think your statistics are wrong... Maybe 50% of the couples that DIVORCE divorce within the first one to 2 years. It just seems unrealistic the way you worded it :-/. If indeed that was correct, than the world is going to Hell :). People should educate themselves before rambling on. This is the only paragraph I put my own opinion in :). So what is love to me?
Love is a gentle rain and the fierceness of a tempest, eternally joined with the fires of the heart.
