Nicole Gurran is right: unaffordable housing in Sydney can't be dismissed as the outcome of a lack of new land to build on.
However, culpability for poor housing affordability still remains with the state government. Developers will always charge as much as they can get away with. A failure to provide sufficient public housing interspersed with new developments, poor public transport infrastructure with limited expansion into new areas, and a dependency on developers to fund new roads, parks and schools has resulted in uneven development across the city. This is compounded by metropolitan planning rules that are too vague and often flouted.
Housing in Sydney is out of hand, with pockets of relative affluence and disadvantage appearing across the city. Both government infrastructure investment and urban planning across Sydney need to be strengthened to make housing more affordable and liveable, and to ensure this is done fairly.
