Recycled water

It’s strange (although not all that surprising) that the NSW Government is claiming that Sydney residents won’t accept recycled drinking water, and therefore an expensive desalination plant needs to be constructed. Other than the odd polling exercise, which is subject to statistical errors and doesn’t account for the fact that people change their behaviour once a new scheme is implemented, what real evidence do they have for this contention? Surely it would be better to at least try water recycling before the massive (and irreversible) investment in desalination is kicked off. Actually, recycled water has been in the water supply for Windsor and Richmond for years without problems, so what’s all the fuss about? I suspect voters care more about a steady water supply and loosening of restrictions rather than where their water is sourced from, provided it is adequately treated.
