With the passing of Don Chipp (may he rest in peace) and recent parliamentary behaviour of Sandra Kanck, we’ve been reminded over the past week that Australia’s once powerful third parliamentary force, the erstwhile Australian Democrats, are past their use-by date. This is a pity - the Howard government is going increasingly unchallenged, Labor is in disarray and the Greens are off with the pixies half the time. Who’s gonna save us? No, even he joined the Labor Party. It’s been a sobering week for our democracy (with Jihad Jack and all), and the following came to mind…
Ode to the Aussie Democrats
(apologies to John Williamson)
What am I gonna do? What about the future?
“Keep the bastards honest” has gone astray
Once the balance of power, now a few nobodies
Even Cheryl Kernot faded away
Round and round they go, supporting another tax law
Gotta get some attention - can’t go slow!
Sandra Kanck, well, she’ll bring the party food
Natasha, Aiden - what’s the go?
R.I.P R.I.P Don Chipp, all over the papers
Throw em in the bin, they’re Kancked today
Nightmare, dreaming - we’ve Howard and I’m screaming
Parliament’s a big bore; more decay.
(Brad Ruting. And thanks to Byron aka
norby_ for the RIP RIP Don Chipp idea)
