DCHS Microchipping Clinic
Saturday, November 4th 2006
Dane County Humane Society (DCHS) will hold a Microchip clinic Saturday, November 4, 2006 from 10:00 am - 4:00 p.m. The cost is $30 per animal and includes chip registration and the appointment.
For additional information or to register, please contact Charla, SNAP coordinator, at 608-838-0413 ext. 103. We strongly suggest calling ahead to reserve an appointment, but walk ins are welcome too.
According to the American Humane Association, only 16% of dogs and 2% of cats that end up at animal shelters across the country will be reunited with their families. In March 2005, DCHS began microchipping all adoptable dogs and cats hoping to improve these statistics. Currently, only about 20% of the animals that pass through our doors are microchipped.
The microchip is an effective form of permanent identification. It can be used in any kind of animal at any age and will last an animal’s lifetime. The chip is slightly larger than a grain of rice and is placed just under the skin by a veterinarian. An anti-migration cap helps prevent movement within the pet's body. Each chip is encoded with a unique and unalterable identification code that can only be activated when read by a scanner.
The problem for most owners is that they do not expect to lose their pet, and when they do, it becomes their worst nightmare. Think back to the number of signs that we have all seen in our own neighborhoods. That "Lost Pet" sign is a reminder that something went wrong. The unfortunate part is that thousands of unidentified pets are lost and may never be recovered. Those “Lost Pet” signs serve as a constant reminder that someone is missing a beloved pet. Our pets deserve better. Microchipping is a solution.
