*chapter 17*

The class bell rung without him noticing that the day was already over. Maru quickly rushed to gather up with things, wanting to see the other, wanting to confirm the other’s feeling one more time, but before he knew it, everyone left, leaving only him in the empty room.

If only he had packed his stuff first, he would had already left to see Koki, he would had been with the other first before seeing Koki go off with Kazuya. But maybe, he still has a chance, he still has a slight luck that Kazuya would get held up, and he’ll at least exchange greeting with Koki, before seeing the older boy’s smile for Kazuya. These were the thought that filled his head as he ran down the hall passed his slow schoolmates, forgetting the rules of no running.

However, as soon as he reached the door, he froze.

Before his eyes, he knew he was too late. Maru watched in the distance as Koki greeted Kazuya, bowing slightly before opening the door for his master. Maru watched as Koki smiled, that smile, behind Kazuya’s back, watching him enter the car. And as he closed the door, Maru saw Koki turned, back toward the car, that special smile broaden. Koki was smiling to himself, with the thought of Kazuya in his mind-- Maru just knew this.

Though he had hoped to talk to Koki for just a bit before the day ended, he found himself not being able to move. The students walked passed him, one by one, but they all disappeared from his sight. All he saw was the older boy, walking away without even noticing his existence.

Painfully, Maru watched them leave, every movement of Koki engraved in his mind. His heart ached, even though they were no where in his sight now, his heart hurt even more and he didn’t understand. Maybe it was due to the fact that he really did confirm his confusion, but Maru wasn’t going to admit this, because it’ll only hurt him more. He stood there in place until everyone left and then slowly, he brought up his hand, placing it on his chest.

“Why does it hurt so much?…”

*********

By the time they were done with their punishment, the sun was already setting, leaving the empty school to be cover in a shade of orange.

“Ah~ we’re finally done!” Yamapi yelled as the two exited the building.

Jin gave out a stretch and whined, “My aching back!”

“But seriously, the teacher was too much! Making us clean the toilets by ourselves, we weren’t the only one talking! If you think about it, there were seriously louder people chatting during that time. If only Kazuya didn’t pinpoint us out, the teacher wouldn’t even had notice our little whisper,” Yamapi complained, “Stupid Kazuya.”

“I’m sorry, it’s my fault, I shouldn’t had ask you that question during his lecture,” Jin apologized remembering how they even got caught.

“What?! It’s not your fault! If only Kazuya didn’t say anything, I could had helped you caught up quickly…seriously, why does that guy always seem to be trouble?”

Jin nodded, but as soon as he did that, Yamapi suddenly turn to him, catching him off guard.

“Ne, don’t you think Kazuya is weird?” he asked.

Jin gave out a confuse chuckle, “Hasn’t he always been kinda weird?”

“No, I mean, he’s a lot weirder now, don’t you think? I’m not sure how to put this but, it’s like he’s out to get us or something. I understand our first meeting was definitely not a good impression and you and him will never get along, seeing your situation but don’t you think this is too much?” Yamapi tried to explain, but it just made Jin more confused, “I mean, he wouldn’t know we were whispering if he wasn’t watching us, right?”

As Yamapi said this, Jin suddenly stopped walking. Now that he think about it, Yamapi was right. Was Kazuya always staring at them? Was Kazuya always plotting something? Jin wasn’t sure what to think. Of course the devil was in a bad mood that morning, but for him to watch them to the point of seeing their small conversation, which could had gone unnoticed, something must be up.

“He must really hate me…” Jin muttered out.

Yamapi noticed that his friend wasn’t by his side anymore and turned back to see the troubled boy, “Jin?” he called out, getting the boy’s attention, “Don’t worry too much, I think I’m just over thinking it!” he quickly said as he walked back to pull the other, “Why would he be out to get us, right? I’m sure we just happened to get caught.”

Jin watched as Yamapi tried hard to cheer him up and with this, he smiled, “Yeah.”

“Lets go grab something to eat!” Yamapi said instead.

“And you’ll pay?”

Hearing this Yamapi glared at him, “Fine, fine, fine I’ll treat this time.” he replied as he place his arm around the other’s shoulder.

*********

Kazuya wandered aimlessly around the house, not knowing what to do. His entertainment wasn’t home yet and he was really bored. It wasn’t like he was waiting for Jin or anything, he had better things to do than wait for the useless boy, but he couldn’t help feeling annoyed that the other hasn’t gotten home yet.

He somehow made it to the dining room as he walked over to the window-- taking a glance outside. “What’s taking him so long?” he complained, noticing that the sun was already setting and the younger boy was no where in sight. “Don’t tell me, he’s taking his sweet time with Yamapi and disregarding his chores! And we haven’t even finish the project! Ugh…that little useless-”

“Master Kazuya…”

Before he could finish his sentence, he suddenly heard his name being said, making him stop. He turned around and walked over to the end of the dining hall, where he heard his name.

“Are the maids gossiping about me?” he thought, peeking into the other room to catch whoever that was speaking ill of him.

That was when he saw both Junno and Ryo, busily doing their chores as they continued their conversation.

“Master Kazuya really did change a lot in a short period of time, ne?” Junno replied.

“I what?” Kazuya thought, watching this.

Ryo nodded, “I was actually surprise to come home to an improved master,” he chuckled, “This beat him sneaking out at night and having to trouble the madam, plus, we don’t have to deal with his angry self in the morning.”

“We have Jin to thanks for that,” Junno replied.

“True, I feel kind of sorry for the lad, having to be the one to wake the master up, but seeing that Jin haven’t quit yet, it might not be that bad.”

Junno suddenly stopped what he was doing, as he turned to Ryo, “Now that I think about it, the master started changing since Jin came to the house. I mean, he was made the master’s personal maid, but it must had been for a good thing! The master is definitely different than what he use to be like before.” Junno called out chirpily.

“Is that so? Jin must be a lucky charm to this house then.” Ryo smiled, “Ne, Junno, do you remember to clean…”

The rest of the conversation became distinct as Kazuya backed up, a bit shocked.

“I…changed?” he whispered, “because of that useless boy?”

Kazuya tried to recall if this was true, did he really change because of Jin? Of course not, right? Why would he change himself for an idiot, useless person. But now that he think of it, he haven’t been sneaking out at night recently. His anger and attention were always directed to the other. When did Jin became so important that he’ll waste every moment thinking about the idiot?

“No, he didn’t change me…why would I change for him?” he thought, shaking his head to get any thought of Jin out of it. He didn’t like realizing this, it irritated him to no end, thinking that he would change himself for such a person, there was no way in hell that his world would alter!

Jin has no importance in his life. Jin’s existence meant nothing to him.

“He means nothing to me…” Kazuya whispered.

As soon as he walked out of the room, he saw Jin entering.

The other quickly took notice of him, “Good evening Master Kazuya.” he greeted as he bowed.

Kazuya felt frustrated seeing the other, but instead of yelling, he looked away, “Go change,” he said instead, “After changing come to my room, so we can finish up the project.” he commanded, as he walked up the stairs. He have to contain this, he will not waste his energy in a useless being like Jin.

The younger boy watched him walk off. He couldn’t help thinking that something was off. Jin wasn’t sure if he was thinking too much, but something didn’t felt right with the conversation he just had with the devil.

*********

The room was quiet, too quiet to be exact. Jin kept finding himself remembering what Yamapi had said to him, about Kazuya staring at him. Jin felt uncomfortable thinking like this, since it was making him nervous around the older boy. But every time he glanced up at the devil, the devil never looked his direction once, nor did he say anything to the other, he just sat there quietly finishing up his work.

Even when Jin had a questions, there was no remark of how stupid, useless and dumb the boy was. The devil quickly answered his questions and went straight back to his own work.

Something was really off now, Jin just knew it. He unsurely stared at the devil once more, watching the other worked, the back of his head toward Jin.

Was what Yamapi said really just his friend overreacting? But what was happening at the moment didn’t feel right either, Jin wasn’t use to this. Though he wasn’t even sure what ’this’ was. Kazuya never acted this way, no matter what mood he was in. If he’s mad, he’ll yell, if he’s bored, he’ll complain, even when he’s pissed, he’ll glare…but this Kazuya wasn’t doing any of this… what exactly was going on? He seemed normal that morning and even though Kazuya had pinpointed Jin and Yamapi out during class, it didn’t feel as odd as what was happening that exact moment. Did something happen?

Quickly Jin shook his head, “I shouldn’t be thinking like that. Maybe he just really wants to finish up this project.” Jin thought, deciding not to over think anything-- not what Yamapi had said nor the situation he was in, instead he went back to work.

And before he knew it, the two were done with their project, Kazuya left to the bathroom, ordering Jin to gather everything before he leaves, not once looking his way.

“…what’s going on here?” Jin whispered to the empty room.

*********

“Did he get food poisoning?” Jin whispered, before shaking his head, “No, it can’t be that…” even though it been an hour since he left the devil’s room and was now cleaning the Madam’s room, he continued to think about Kazuya. He wasn‘t certain, but he knew something was wrong, something was definitely not right. The whole thing just made Jin uncomfortable and he wasn’t sure why.

“Is he sick?…” Jin whispered, worried, but suddenly he realize his feeling and shook it off, “Am I actually worried? What’s wrong with me? Why am I thinking like this?” he quickly said, “It’s not like I know him well enough to know when something is wrong with him or something!” Jin sulked, “I’m not worried about him…why would I be?…”

That was when Jin decided to focus on his chores instead, giving it his full attention. However, before he could continue his chores, something caught his eyes, making him look up.

“That is…”

By the wall in front of him, sitting on top of the dresser, with it’s crimson pink over coated shine, stood something that Jin remembered clearly.

“…the vase.” he whispered out. It was the vase that he had broken the day he went shopping with the devil and Kazuya made him carried everything. The vase was on top and it fell, breaking to many pieces.

The boy remember staying up late trying to put the vase together, but he had completely forgot about it the next morning. Now that he thought about it, he never even finish gluing all the pieces back, the vase just disappeared…then why was it there? Sitting on top of the madam’s dresser?

Jin confusedly set his broom down and walked over to the vase, unsure on how it got there. But the moment he reached the thing, it surprised him even more. There was no sign of crack ever being on the vase, not even a scratch. There was nothing on it to indicate that it was ever broken.

“How can this be?” he whispered, he was positive it was this vase that he had broken, the color of it was a unique color that shimmered so differently that it made Jin remember it clearly, “How can there be no crack at all?…” Without knowing, Jin unconsciously reached out his hand, still not sure if this was the vase that he had broken, if it wasn’t, then why haven’t the madam said anything?

“Jin!”

Jin quickly stopped before his hand could even touch the vase and turned toward the voice, there stood the smiley Junno.

“Remember we-”

“Junno, did you do this?” the younger boy interrupted, pointing at the item.

Seeing Jin’s reaction caused Junno to be confused, “Do what?” he asked, “Put the vase there?” he shook his head, “It wasn’t me.”

“No, I meant put it together.”

“What? As in make it?”

“No, no, no, I meant…” Jin grew frustrated at himself, not knowing why he wanted to know so badly, “I meant, this vase was broken before, I broke this vase before…but why is it here?”

“Huh?” Junno was now more than confused with what Jin was trying to say, “Jin, are you okay?”

Jin gave out a small smile, “I’m okay, sorry I’m starting to sound like a mad man,” he apologized, “But let me explain, I broke a vase that looked exactly like this one that one time I went shopping with Master Kazuya, but I wasn’t able to finish putting it together and then it just disappeared, so I just thought that maybe, you?”

The other nodded slowly, finally understanding what the younger boy was indicating, “Sorry Jin, but it wasn’t me…”

“Then what could had happen to the broken vase? Or is this really…then how did it get here?” Jin asked, confused once more.

In the next room, the light was dimmed, the window opened to let in some cool air. In the middle of the bed, the devil opened a box, revealing a crimson pink coated vase, as soon as the light hit it, it shimmered beautifully. However, this vase had no value, even though it shined beautifully, it was broken. Every piece glued back together were noticeable on it’s surface and it had a huge empty space on the side of it’s body, from the uncompleted job that Jin did.

Kazuya slowly took out the vase and stared at it, thinking of the night that he had retrieved it from Jin’s room while the boy fell asleep working on it.

“How come I didn’t break it that night?” he mumbled, remembering that he had planned to take the vase and break it again just to scare the other even more, “How come I decided to keep you? Why do I still have you?”

He didn’t understand himself. He was so close to breaking the vase, but as he stared at Jin, he couldn’t find it in himself to do so. It’s not like the vase had value, nor did the useless boy do a good job at putting the thing back together, so why?

“It’s unlike me to keep such a useless, worthless thing…”

And as he said that, he suddenly remember the conversation he had overheard. Was he really changing? That a useless thing like this became important?

Kazuya suddenly shook his head, “Never, never would I ever change for someone like you,” he mumbled, “Not in this lifetime…”

Kazuya placed the vase back in it’s box and decide to put it back, “I’ll throw it away tomorrow, I don’t need useless things…”

He wasn’t going to change, there was no way.

*********

“I feel like it been so long since I last talked to the two of you!” Kazuya suddenly called out to his two best friends.

Maru and Ueda stared at him in confusion. The three of them were up on the rooftop of the school getting ready to eat their lunch when the mischievous one of the three suddenly said the most weirdest thing.

“We just talked…yesterday,” Ueda affirmed, he clearly remembered Kazuya claiming that Junno and Jin were dating.

The devil quickly discard the other’s remark with a glare, “Anyways,” he started, turning to his other friend, “Maru, you haven’t called me once to go clubbing nowadays! What’s wrong with you?” he asked instead.

Maru stared at Kazuya, surprise that he even brought it up.

“It been a long time since we last went clubbing,” Kazuya continued, “How about this,” he said as he walked over to Maru, throwing an arm around his shoulder, “Lets go tonight, I’ll treat?”

Maru was still slightly shocked, not really sure how to answer the other. Sure, it was true, Maru haven’t been asking Kazuya to go clubbing nor have he been feeling like himself lately. He only kept thinking of Koki’s smile and it only pained him.

Maybe it was best to forget, best to had never realize his feeling for the other than have such pain and ugly jealousy. He rather be a careless person, than someone who’ll only get hurt. Maru looked back at Kazuya. He didn’t want to hate his best friend. It was best to go back to who he use to be, before opening the key to his heart, before falling in love, before realizing that the one he loved had eyes for his best friend.

“’bout time you ask me.” he said as he smiled at Kazuya. He will go back, as if he never opened his heart.

Hearing this, Kazuya chuckled, nodding his head, “Sound like a plan tonight.”
