Title: Wild Horses
Rating: G
Pairing: jaemin
Summary: ... farm!jaemin :)
The pages of the textbook you abandoned stick together from the humidity caused by the rain outside. A sheet of water forms on the transparent surface. Something in your head says something about condensation and the difference of the temperature on the glass and in the air. You ignore it because there's something outside the window you rather pay attention to.
Another boy. He rides on a taupe horse through the rain everyday. He is one of those country boys you always see when you come here. Your parents sent you here for the summer so you could learn about 'culture'. Apparently, their idea of 'culture' was working for your grandparents on their farm. That reason, and something about not wanting you to be a spoiled city kid.
And it is on one of those sunnier days, when you are tending to one of the smallest pigs, singing to yourself, that it happens.
"That's some voice."
"Thanks." You turn to greet him, squinting a bit as the sun hits your eyes.
"You have to give it water."
"Huh?" You realize after your intelligent response he means the pig.
"The pig, it's thirsty and it probably won't eat more until it drinks something." He leans casually on your fence. "What's your name?"
"Changmin." He tells you his name in return and leaves, his shadow being eaten up by that glaring sun.
It is sometime next week when you see him riding his horse again. He approaches you later, and leans the same way on your fence. Somewhere in this conversation he tells you that the other boys don't really want to associate with you. You are curious as to why, and he tells you about your rich family and their reputation here. A feeling of guilt, perhaps shame too, starts to wind its way around your heart but he tells you not to feel bad.
"It's life. And life is fair."
He gets yelled at for not taking proper care of the family farm, for not preparing himself to inherit what little his family owned. That's when he is outside throwing rocks at your window like he is from some corny Korean drama and calling you to come down. You are dragged into accompanying him to the wheat field farther from the ranch. And you watch. When he rides the horse, it's like he is running from something.
With the moon as witness, he says he wants to be like a wild horse.
You have no idea what that means.
You do not know why you spend so much time with the weird country boy - maybe he fascinates you, maybe you are lonely. You really wonder why when he starts singing for you. The boy is tone-deaf - there is no question about it. You look up the disease later on that night because you find that you are worried Jaejoong might actually be tone-deaf.
A person who is tone deaf lacks relative pitch, the ability to discriminate between notes. Thus one who is tone deaf is unable to accurately discriminate between musical notes and is thus also incapable of reproducing them.
So you are still unsure if this could be serious or not; and decide that you are going to watch, or rather, listen from now on.
He talks with a monotonous voice a lot. But then there are times when his voice shoots up with excitement and you wonder if he notices. But then you start noticing other weird things like how his eyes seem to try to widen when he talks, jumping almost. Does this kid have double eyelids or not? He talks like his cheeks are getting in the way. There's a lot of baby fat on those cheeks. You do not know if it is cute or sad. He pinches your cheeks and you raise an eyebrow at him. It's cute.
He never really frowns.
And you are scared poopless, figuratively of course, when the horse under you starts galloping. He laughs at you.
"Face the fear and not be scared!"
You get off the horse as soon as possible.
Oh my god. Get his lips off yours now. Your hands finish bandaging his knee - he fell off his horse before. You do not move and he runs off in the direction of the sun, turning around and yelling 'thank you' before he runs off again.
This time, the sun's kisses are so sweet that you don't blink.
You find a letter in the mailbox. He left. He left this place.
Dear Changmin,
I went away to be a wild horse.
I'm going to sing my heart out!
Changmin, throw caution away, and just run.
Love recklessly, because I know your heart wants you to.
Jaejoong.
When you go back home, you monitor the television for a tone-deaf chubby boy.
You know what he means now.
End.
Wild horses I wanna be like you
Throwing caution to the wind, I'll run free too
Wish I could recklessly love like I'm longing to
I wanna run with the wild horses.
Run with the wild horses.
