Duo's early morning runs were always the start of his day. While most people might seek out a coffee pot to waken their senses for the next eighteen hours or so, Duo pulled on his favorite sneakers and ran four miles.
This time, though, he had a friend to go with him. Mech, the German Shepherd puppy, had enough stamina and speed to keep up for the better part of the run. On the way home, though, Duo found himself having to carry the poor thing after it decided enough was enough and took a seat on the curb, gazing up at Duo with a look of, "Not another step."
But Duo hadn't been interested in going back to the warehouse just yet. All that waited for him was hard training and hard training and hard training. Didn't those guys know anything about a day off? It was twice as good for the body as working straight through the week with no rest.
Well, if they wouldn't give him one, he'd take one of his own accord.
Not too far from the warehouse was an elementary school with a full playground. Swings, slides, merry-go-rounds. You name it. He couldn't help but indulge.
He couldn't remember when in his childhood one of those recess structures stopped being a playground and became a training ground. It had stopped being fun time and started to be a race to see how quickly and easily he could get from one end to the other. Not that anyone was counting except for him.
But now, he let himself turn back into that kid who only had to be a kid, not a pilot. Just a boy and his dog. By the end of the hour, the slides and seesaws were dirtied with muddy shoe and paw prints. The merry go round had claw scratches on it, and the dirt under the swings was kicked up, as well as farther out where he allowed himself a bit of "See how far you can jump after swinging as high as you can." Boy stuff. The puppy was sleeping in the shade of a tree, and Duo was hanging from the monkey bars by his knees. That was nice, just relaxing, letting all the stress and tension of it all wash out of him with the flow of gravity.
As an after thought, he reached down to his phone on the ground and poked it to check the time. He should have been back at the warehouse three hours ago. He didn't care. They hadn't called, it looked like, so they obviously didn't need him.
"Hey, Mecharoo, you wanna go back yet?" He asked, looking over at the dog. The puppy raised his half-floppy ears and tilted his head, then whined and laid his chin on his paws.
Duo laughed and closed his eyes.
"Take that as a no. We'll chill out a while longer."
