It had been a fairly normal evening for Red X. He had departed Atlantic City the day Gotham was wiped off the map by a Smilex leak, and a nation-wide manhunt for the Joker began, making him almost as wanted as a man as Osama Bin Laden himself. Well, at least the heat was off of him; he had broken into the Trump Casino in Atlantic City, looted its vault, and then sold all of the casino chips on the black market. His money was then safely stashed away in numerous foreign bank accounts, under assumed names he had hacked himself.
Where was he now? Red X had created a fake identity in Metropolis, under the assumed name of "Dr. Edwin Vincenzo," a stock market success story; perhaps the last one before the recession. A perfect cover name.
Renting out a penthouse in a ritzy hotel, Red X continued his lifestyle of rob one place, stay in another temporarily, spend all the money, and then steal more. He was always gone by the time the maids came to clean the place up, and always back just as everyone else went to bed. Tonight, however, he was in the mood for a little... class. There was an art convention going on, and Red X was in the mood to steal the most expensive piece there, just as the curtains went up to reveal it to the auction-goers.
He exited his teleportation field on the rooftop, landing near the security detail. Reaching his arm out just as he hit the concrete of the rooftop, Red X grabbed a security guard by the neck, and jammed his thumb into the side of his Adam's apple, knocking him unconscious and struggling for breath instantaneously. Just as he did, however, he heard the crowd gasp, and start screaming. Thinking he had been discovered, Red X raised his eyes to see the sky suddenly illuminate a blue color.
A large, dome-shaped veil of light was covering the city, just above the tallest skyscraper in Metropolis. It had fallen around the entire city within a minute, from the outskirts to downtown, covering it in a shimmering blue light, like an aurora. The air seemed tense. People were screaming everywhere in the city, like in one of those crappy Godzilla movies when the monster first appeared. Red X could scarcely believe his eyes. What in the hell was this!?
Little did Red X know, it was the beginning of a long, and dark time for Metropolis, and indeed, the world at large.
