[Holly's Blog] January in Review

Feb 03, 2013 14:05

The first week of January, all three of us took turns getting incredibly sick. When it was Brian's turn to be ill, Luke and I went to the supermarket to get him ginger ale, and got into a car accident. The car was totaled. Since the accident, we've seen a different car run the red light practically every time we've been at that intersection, so now I'm terrified to drive to the supermarket. Fortunately, we found a replacement car cheap enough for us to afford, and it's actually in very good condition. It's easily as nice as the car we lost, which I didn't think would be possible since the Intrepid belonged to Brian's grandfather and he barely drove it. So now we no longer have the car OR the car seat that Luke came home from the hospital in after his birth, and this makes me sad.
I'm also sad that it's TOO COLD to run outside most days, and I don't have a gym membership. But, I'm running three days a week anyway, often on my mother's treadmill. I've also started doing the Insanity workouts about five days a week. I haven't lost much weight so far but I feel good and my running speed has improved much more rapidly than I was expecting. I'm also doing yoga once or twice a week when I feel like I need it. So I'm managing fine without a gym, but I MISS IT SO MUCH.
I've been tracking my calories on myfitnesspal.com again, because I still have about 15 pounds to lose, but I'm not sure how many I should be eating. Luke is still nursing but not as often as he was a few months ago, and I'm not sure how many calories I'm burning when I exercise. So it's possible that I'm still overeating. Speaking of food, I tried three new recipes made with three vegetables I don't eat a lot of. The pineapple-carrot muffins were delicious (even though I forgot the baking soda) and the stuffed cabbage casserole was really good too. The orzo/beet concoction I attempted was...awful. I've never cooked with beets before and they turned the whole dish pink, and it was flavorless and inedible. If I'm ever brave enough to attempt beets again, I'll probably roast them or something.
As far as writing goes, I finally finished the first draft of the newest novel. My first drafts run short so it's just over 30,000 words at this point. I also found a writing grant that I want to apply for, so I've been working on that application.
My unofficial reading goals for 2013 were 50 new books for myself and 150 for Luke. In January I read eight books, and read 21 to Luke, so we're off to a good start. Even when we were without a car, I tried to get us to the library once a week to check out new books and play in the kids' area.
Some Goals for February:
-Finish the second draft of the novel and get it up to 50,000 words.
-Submit the grant application.
-Continue my 10K training three days a week and Insanity at least four days a week.
-Finally get out of the 130s.
-Take Luke to baby story time at the library.
-Do something social. January was pretty solitary.
