I haven't read anything by Cassandra Clare yet. I have not read the City of Bones or City of Ashes or City of nobody-gives-a-shit yet, and I don't really know if I plan to. The most common rumour I hear about Cassandra Clare is that she's well known for plagiarism and was banned on Fanfiction.net for stealing several lines and scenes from shows and books like Buffy, Blackadder and The secret country and inserting them into her own fanfiction called The Draco trilogy. You can read the whole story
HERE. I can't be bothered going into the whole story.
Cassandra Clare was warned several times about her plagiarism, but she continued to sneak lines and scenes from different sources into her story. She then decided to give credit for them and didn't seem to understand what the big problem was since she didn't claim those lines or scenes as her own, she thought it was okay to do so since she gave credit.
My problem with this is: why would you want to take from other sources in the first place? Why not make your own shit up? How hard can it be to make up your own lines and your own scenes? I don't care about how much a writer may like a certain line or phrase or scene that they want to make a smart reference to it. It's not yours. Get over it and make your own. Don't paraphrase because that doesn't count. That's even sillier. If the woman can make up a whole series of books on her own I'm sure it won't be that much of a fight to make up her own scenes and her own lines. I really don't understand why she wanted to borrow from other sources like that, even though she has given credit for it. She's still copying scenes into her stuff, and that makes no sense to me. Just make up your own shit. What's the big deal? It can't be that difficult to be original.
