End She should have been taking pictures and weeping tears of joy and pride. She should have been clinging to her husband's hand as they watched their son collect his diploma. She would have, if this was a typical gradation ceremony and they were a typical family, but they both knew that wasn't true. Everyone else, including their son, thought they were, and in spite of the mistakes they had both made, the deception had held up for twenty years. Twenty sometimes horrible, sometimes wonderful (and equally horrible for that fact) years.
Angie couldn't do it. She couldn't pretend that her son's accomplishment was the only thing on her mind.. As March No. 1 started and every parent in the place started to cheer, their eyes focus solely on the graduating class, all she could think was that it was finally over...They'd finally be free.
Patrick's grip on her hand was enough to make her wince in pain, knocking her from her foolish daydream. The dark look on his face was enough to make her want to jerk her hand up and smash his smug face in, maybe even go so far as to twist his neck around in that brutal way she'd learned in those ''self defense classes” she took to fit in with everyone else on the lane. Her thoughts wandered to all they ways she'd thought of killing the man who'd kept her prisoner for two decades.
She was sure she could do it, and if Patrick was stupid enough to bring his gun with the silencer to the graduation, it would be all that much simpler. He'd be dead before the rest of the auditorium stopped clapping long enough to notice.
...but she didn't. She couldn't.
Not with their son watching them.
