Yep, it's hard to create character which will be loved and accepted. Kripke, as you said, hasn't been able so far with a girl for Dean.
Jo had potential, but she had crush on Dean and that was something, what make me think she's not for him. I generally don't like when female character is all over the man, shows interests and draw hearts everywhere when an is simply not interested.
Bela on the other hand is opposite. She can make Dean speechless, drool and tempt. She is independent and intelligent but I don't like her. Why? To like character we have to understand her/him, know the reasons of her/his behavior or at least be intrigued enough to find out who s/he really is. And Bela? I don't find her deep enough.

Shame to say, I had an idea of OFC in my head once and she was a hunter. I liked her. She was totally different world for Dean, because I was reading sci-fic book then about alternative universe where Jesus went down from the cross and killed all his persecutors.
Anyyyway, there were an exorcist there whose powers I used to create my OFC.
But, why am I telling you that?
Oh yes, Penny. I can't wait for more of her.
And your female hunter. I'd like to know what would she be like.
*hugs*

Well, one wants the character to be Dean's equal. I don't think Jo was given a particularly fair shake in that regard, as she was written as a girl with a crush. I won't belabor people with my opinions on Bela, whom I think is shoe-horned into the show and I can't imagine Dean having sex - let alone a relationship - with someone who put Sam into so much danger. He's gone after Gordon for doing it once.

And, yeah, she's definitely a one-note character...whom I really wanted to love to hate when I first read about her. I'm very disappointed that I don't, if that makes any sense. With Gordon and Henrickson gone, Bela could have been a good human antagonist...

But, what do I know?

And there's nothing wrong with having a hunter for an OFC. I just don't do it because, well, it's done a lot - and there are people who write them much more effectively than I do. My niche seems to be the girl who has nothing to do with hunting but ends up finding out (Penny) or the girl who knows what's going on but isn't a hunter (like Charlotte).

The story I'm writing now is an interesting mix of the two. I'm actually a little worried because she's a psychic (like Missouri, not one of the YED kids) whose father was a hunter... And there's a whole back story between John and her mother. My comment was, "OMG, I'm writing psychic Jo!" ;-P

But I think I can pull it off. embroiderama's read everything I've written so far...and she'd definitely tell me if the character was OTT or the story just wasn't working.
