Little Damn Table

She had forgotten how much she missed the rain. The constant pounding of water droplets as they collided with her bare flesh. Normally she would have enjoyed the feeling, but not now. Not after all of this. Her feet continuously sliced through the muddy pathways as she ran. She knew better. She never should have let him in, never should have trusted him. The sharp stones sliced through her feet and she cried out to no one in particular, “Why didn’t I grab my damn shoes?” There was a very obvious reason of course, but she wanted nothing more than to forget all about it. She stumbled and fell deep into the rain-soaked grass. The moment ironically reminded her of a past dream and she laughed harshly into the night. She could hear faint footsteps increasingly get louder as her follower finally caught up. A pair of strong hands roughly yanked her up to her feet. She couldn’t help but grin as she smashed her fist firmly against his jaw.

Angel ground his teeth together and shook her by the shoulders. “You’re going to listen to me.”

She cocked her head and sarcastically replied, “Make me.”

He dug his fingers into her flesh and knew there’d be bruises left tomorrow.

Faith felt the pain shoot through her arms and smirked. “Am I dealing with Angelus now? I’d expect him after that little display earlier.”

“That was an accident.” He kept his voice to a low growl that was barely audible in the pouring rain.

“So you accidentally fell into bed and lost all your clothes? Yeah, that’s real believable.” She rolled her eyes and let her head fall to the side.

He released one of her arms and reached up to grab her face. “Look at me.” He pulled her chin up until he could see her dark brown eyes. “I never meant for that to happen.”

She scoffed loudly and shoved at his chest. She moved backwards, keeping a safe distance between them. “You knew exactly what you were doing!” Her eyes practically glowed from the intensity of her anger. “I expected it from her. But not you. For the first time in my life I trusted someone, and look how smart that turned out to be!”

“Faith.” He reached out his hand to comfort her.

“No!” She shoved his hand aside and laughed. “Oh, no. You don’t get to pretend that you care.”

“It didn’t mean anything. I still have my soul, don’t I?”

“You slept with her. After everything she put both of us through!” There was evident sadness all over her face as she spat out her words.

“I know. I’m sorry.” He hung his head in shame. “But we have a history together.”

“And what about me? Was I just her replacement? Another one of your super-hero girlfriends?”

“No. You’re more than that.” He cautiously took a few steps closer to her.

“How? How am I more than that?” She shivered from the drenching rain and rubbed her hands over her arms.

“You’re more than that because I… I love you.”

Her eyes widened from shock and she almost tripped as she scrambled away from him. “No. No, you don’t. You can’t.”

“I love you, Faith.” He placed his hands on her shoulders and pulled her towards him.

“No!” She punched wildly at his chest. “Why? Why would you possibly love me?”

He grabbed her failing hands and held them tightly against his body. “I love the way that you can live off eating popcorn, and how you buy the paper every day just to read The Family Circus. I love that you’ve been through so much, but you still fight for what’s right. And most of all, I love how you’ve seen the absolute worst of me and never held back because of it.” He smiled softly at her. “I love everything about you, Faith.”

She pulled out of his embrace and shook her head vehemently. Without another word, she turned and began to walk away from him.

“Faith!” Angel grabbed her by the arm and spun her around to face him. Before she could protest, he quickly covered her lips with his own. He ended the kiss, but kept her face close and stared into her eyes. “I’m not giving up on you.”

Hesitation flickered through her mind, but she pushed it aside pulled him back down into a bruising kiss. He dug his hands deep into her soaking wet hair and she rose up on her toes to wrap her arms around his neck. They continued to kiss passionately as the storm raged on around them, the rain drops dripping down their conjoined faces. Faith smiled into the kiss and determined that the rain might not be so bad after all.
