cellonaut (10:36:59 PM): I just had an overambitious idea that you should talk me out of, in your capacity of assistant small ensembles director.
Shari1986 (10:39:34 PM): haha
Shari1986 (10:39:37 PM): what sort of idea?
cellonaut (10:37:25 PM): a musical one?
Shari1986 (10:39:55 PM): brb
cellonaut (10:37:37 PM): k
Shari1986 (10:41:10 PM): okay, what sort of musical idea?
cellonaut (10:39:02 PM): haha. welll....
cellonaut (10:39:07 PM): i was just listening to the holberg suite.
cellonaut (10:39:19 PM): and that's an awesome piece.
cellonaut (10:39:23 PM): but it can't be played by quartet.
cellonaut (10:39:32 PM): it's a chamber piece.
Shari1986 (10:41:55 PM): haha
Shari1986 (10:41:56 PM): oaky
Shari1986 (10:41:57 PM): *okay
Shari1986 (10:42:01 PM): how many instruments?
cellonaut (10:39:43 PM): ....wouldn't it be awesome to have a chamber orchestra?
cellonaut (10:39:55 PM): just a string orchestra actually.
Shari1986 (10:42:28 PM): haha
cellonaut (10:40:10 PM): one that could play things like barber's adagio and holberg and tchaik's serenade??
Shari1986 (10:42:39 PM): we might as well just form our own orchestra
cellonaut (10:40:50 PM): that's true...if we get enough people, we can get funding right? but it's so hard to get members. i'll look into that.
Shari1986 (10:43:44 PM): lol. I don't think it would be right to do that as part of small ensembles
Shari1986 (10:43:51 PM): I mean, it'd be like taking over the orchestra
cellonaut (10:41:32 PM): why not?
cellonaut (10:41:47 PM): we certainly don't need 36 violins for that sorta thing.
Shari1986 (10:44:24 PM): lol, true. but we can't get more than a few interested anyway
cellonaut (10:42:06 PM): maybe 6-7 violins, 2-3 violas, 2 cellos, one bass.
cellonaut (10:42:21 PM): Well, if we put it out there, maybe we can get interest.
cellonaut (10:42:31 PM): I wanna play holberg!
Shari1986 (10:44:56 PM): haha
cellonaut (10:42:39 PM): and tcahik serenade!
Shari1986 (10:44:59 PM): so 10 people minimum
cellonaut (10:42:42 PM): I love that piece.
cellonaut (10:42:43 PM): probably.
Shari1986 (10:45:04 PM): that actually might not be too bad
Shari1986 (10:45:15 PM): we can put the idea out there
Shari1986 (10:45:16 PM): and try it
cellonaut (10:42:57 PM): YAY!
Shari1986 (10:45:22 PM): lol
Shari1986 (10:45:26 PM): don't get your hopes up too high
cellonaut (10:43:13 PM): ....ooookay.
Shari1986 (10:45:33 PM): remember how hard it was to coordinate 8 people's schedules?
Shari1986 (10:45:38 PM): 10 people would be harder
cellonaut (10:43:20 PM): *sniff* yeah.
Shari1986 (10:45:44 PM): haha
Shari1986 (10:45:46 PM): but we'll see
Shari1986 (10:45:50 PM): it's a possibility
cellonaut (10:43:32 PM): w00t!
cellonaut (10:43:51 PM): also...this might stem from the fact I've been watching way too much nodame cantabile and kiniro no corda.
Shari1986 (10:46:17 PM): haha
cellonaut (10:44:00 PM): which if I haven't mentioned to you already you should try.
Shari1986 (10:46:31 PM): lol, no, you haven't! what's kiniro no corda about?
cellonaut (10:44:13 PM): I'm in love with the rachmaninov piano concerto now.
cellonaut (10:44:15 PM): oooh!
cellonaut (10:44:33 PM): okay. that one is a little bit more fantasy-ish and character based but it's still musical.
cellonaut (10:44:54 PM): there's this school which has a music section and a gen-ed section and every year they hold a big musical concours.
cellonaut (10:45:27 PM): and this gen-ed girl, Kaho, she runs into the school's mascot fairy whom no one but her can see (there's a whole story behind that) and the fairy gets her put into the concours.
cellonaut (10:45:33 PM): but she can't play an instrument.
cellonaut (10:45:54 PM): so the fairy gives her a magic violin which anyone can play. but only if they love music or something like that.
cellonaut (10:46:00 PM): and there are lots of cute anime guys!
Shari1986 (10:48:25 PM): haha, yay!
Shari1986 (10:48:29 PM): that sounds interesting
Shari1986 (10:48:33 PM): I'll have to watch that one!
cellonaut (10:46:36 PM): hehe. it's on cruncy roll, but only up until 16. I hope the group subs more episodes soon. I really want to know what happens.
cellonaut (10:46:53 PM): there's lots of cool classical music in there though the animation is not as accurate as nodame.
cellonaut (10:48:07 PM): actually, there's a lot of chopin, and one of the big pieces in there is tristesse. and when I heard it, I was thinking, hmm...where have i heard that before. and then I realized, it was featured in FMA! In Japanese, the piece is called Wakare no Kyoku. So I printed the sheet music from an anime sheet music site and now I'm learning it. It's probably one of the most difficult pieces I've ever learned.
cellonaut (10:48:14 PM): But I'm doing pretty well. Lots of practice.
Shari1986 (10:50:53 PM): wow, that's really cool!
Shari1986 (10:50:56 PM): a piano piece?
cellonaut (10:48:44 PM): Originally.
cellonaut (10:48:58 PM): the FMA version isn't and in Corda it's used as a violin piece.
Shari1986 (10:51:38 PM): lol, it's pretty adaptable then
Shari1986 (10:51:42 PM): are you playing it on piano?
Shari1986 (10:51:44 PM): or cello?
cellonaut (10:49:27 PM): Piano.
ATTENTION (10:49:34 PM): Transfer complete: Fullmetal_Alchemist_-_Wakare_no_Kyoku.mp3.
cellonaut (10:49:45 PM): I think I have it at home in a book and I want to compare it to the version I'm using to see if it's the same.
Shari1986 (10:52:30 PM): haha, that's a good question
cellonaut (10:50:31 PM): yep!
Shari1986 (10:53:47 PM): this is a pretty piece. I don't remember it from FMA though
cellonaut (10:52:19 PM): this is one of those songs that I definitely recognized from it but couldn't name a scene. I get the feeling it was used with their home though.
Shari1986 (10:54:53 PM): yeah, it's definitely not battle music or anything
cellonaut (10:53:02 PM): Well, the japanese title, wakare no kyoku, means 'song of parting'
Shari1986 (10:56:35 PM): lol, that would make sense with their home then
Shari1986 (10:57:22 PM): you know, the more I think about it the more I really like the idea of a chamber orchestra
Shari1986 (10:57:28 PM): it would be really awesome to play in
Shari1986 (10:57:33 PM): just practically difficult
cellonaut (10:55:14 PM): ooooh!!! wouldn't it??
cellonaut (10:55:24 PM): we can bring it up with the board. they may have some ideas.
Shari1986 (10:57:56 PM): yeah, they might. that's a good idea
Shari1986 (10:58:03 PM): lol, I think I just failed miserably at talking you out of it
cellonaut (10:57:32 PM): I'll say. -_-;
Shari1986 (11:01:07 PM): I think you really are going to have to start your own orchestra wherever you go
Shari1986 (11:01:20 PM): there's too many things to play and groups to play in and not enough time
Shari1986 (11:01:21 PM): !
cellonaut (10:59:17 PM): *sigh* I'll be like Chiaki!
Shari1986 (11:01:58 PM): lol, you will!
cellonaut (11:00:11 PM): I found it!
Shari1986 (11:02:38 PM): found what?
cellonaut (11:00:19 PM): At least one occurence.
cellonaut (11:00:23 PM): Wakare no kyoku!
Shari1986 (11:02:45 PM): oh, in FMA
Shari1986 (11:02:46 PM): where?
cellonaut (11:00:45 PM): in the last episode when hawkeye goes to save mustang and he's laying on the ground bleeding, and she's over him calling his name
Shari1986 (11:03:32 PM): okay, not home music then
Shari1986 (11:03:35 PM): but the title makes sense now
cellonaut (11:01:19 PM): definitely.
cellonaut (11:08:21 PM): If we talk to the board about it now, maybe we can have a sign up sheet for a chamber orchestra, separate from both small ensembles and main pops!
cellonaut (11:08:34 PM): because we can definitely get non members in.
Shari1986 (11:10:57 PM): ooh, yeah!
cellonaut (11:08:41 PM): the real problem will be finding a venue.
cellonaut (11:09:02 PM): but if we were able to do this, I think they'd have their own concert.
cellonaut (11:09:11 PM): maybe east quad.
Shari1986 (11:11:45 PM): yeah. east quad, league, union, there must be other places too
cellonaut (11:09:34 PM): league would be too small.
Shari1986 (11:11:55 PM): the diag...
cellonaut (11:09:50 PM): haha. definitely want to get us on the diag. don't know about a chamber orchestra.
cellonaut (11:10:16 PM): I would intend for that to be more like a high school orchestra concert. maybe three pieces but just actual concert format.
Shari1986 (11:13:08 PM): yeah, that would probably work. I wonder if we could get a stage at the music school, too
cellonaut (11:11:32 PM): Hmm...with katri at east quad, I may have an in. but at the music school, I'm sure music students get priority.
Shari1986 (11:14:10 PM): true. east quad would probably be perfect, if we can get it
cellonaut (11:11:52 PM): I don't think the union really has an appropriate rom.
cellonaut (11:11:54 PM): I think so!
cellonaut (11:12:22 PM): actually, if we could arrange something about food and drink, i think it would be good for the small ensembles concert too.
Shari1986 (11:14:45 PM): alex might have an in at the music school, too
Shari1986 (11:14:52 PM): oh, definitely
cellonaut (11:12:33 PM): being right where all the dorms are, and with parking garages near by.
cellonaut (11:12:40 PM): that's true about alex.
cellonaut (11:13:03 PM): also, if we consider food costs at the league, we could probably spend that sort of money on catering in something.
cellonaut (11:13:09 PM): we always have leftovers.
cellonaut (11:13:13 PM): though if I have to order scores....
cellonaut (11:13:23 PM): still, it shouldn't be that much.
Shari1986 (11:15:45 PM): yeah, that might be more difficult
cellonaut (11:13:28 PM): wow, my head is spinning.
Shari1986 (11:15:49 PM): we'll figure it out
cellonaut (11:13:32 PM): pretty birdies!
Shari1986 (11:15:56 PM): they gave you more money last year
Shari1986 (11:15:57 PM): haha
cellonaut (11:13:42 PM): and i still didn't use it all!
Shari1986 (11:16:05 PM): exactly
cellonaut (11:14:54 PM): We should write up some sort of informal proposal to the board, just listing our ideas. haivng signup sheets for small ensembles and the chamber orchestra and trying to get performances in east quad and kerrytown concerthouse and what else?
Shari1986 (11:18:05 PM): I think that's it
cellonaut (11:15:59 PM): Ah, I feel like there was more.
Shari1986 (11:18:23 PM): and 2 small ensembles concerts, but that's covered by the kerrytown concerthouse
cellonaut (11:16:31 PM): right, we need to work out timing on these things.
Shari1986 (11:18:57 PM): right
Shari1986 (11:19:06 PM): especially if we have a chamber orchestra concert too
Shari1986 (11:19:14 PM): I hope there are enough weekends for this!
cellonaut (11:17:34 PM): that might be a valid concern.
cellonaut (11:17:52 PM): I think most of this stuff will have to have a spring goal. with football games and stuff this semester...
Shari1986 (11:20:21 PM): oh, definitely. we need time to get it started
Shari1986 (11:20:29 PM): we'll just have the usual small ensembles concert in the fall
cellonaut (11:18:33 PM): right.
Shari1986 (11:22:14 PM): maybe we should have the first spring small ensembles concert in early march
Shari1986 (11:22:22 PM): then we can leave the other two for late march/early april
Shari1986 (11:22:55 PM): or, if we get the chamber orchestra going fast, we could have that one earlier
Shari1986 (11:23:07 PM): since we'll have all of fall semester to practice
cellonaut (11:21:26 PM): right. three pieces. the other thing is leadership.
Shari1986 (11:24:01 PM): right
cellonaut (11:21:44 PM): I know many chamber orchestras self-conduct. but than can be tough early on.
cellonaut (11:22:06 PM): If I suggest we find a conducting student....does that mean I should cut back on nodame?
Shari1986 (11:24:31 PM): hahaha
Shari1986 (11:24:34 PM): yes, it does
Shari1986 (11:24:42 PM): do we know any conducting students?
cellonaut (11:22:23 PM): sou desu ne.
cellonaut (11:22:30 PM): no, but we can look!
Shari1986 (11:25:20 PM): we can! again, alex would know some
Shari1986 (11:25:22 PM): I would hope
Shari1986 (11:25:54 PM): maybe we could get whoever's going to replace him to help, too
cellonaut (11:23:40 PM): I think it would be nice to get an undergrad. we do have undergrad conducting, right?
Shari1986 (11:26:02 PM): although we wouldn't know who that is until december
Shari1986 (11:26:13 PM): do we? I thought it was a graduate program
cellonaut (11:24:04 PM): I thought we might have both
cellonaut (11:24:14 PM): let's see
cellonaut (11:24:46 PM): hmm...just masters and doctoral
Shari1986 (11:27:15 PM): yeah
Shari1986 (11:27:24 PM): because that's what Chris was doing, right? and that was a grad program
cellonaut (11:25:08 PM): ah, look at the conducting page!
cellonaut (11:25:09 PM): http://www.music.umich.edu/departments/conducting/auditions.htm
Shari1986 (11:27:54 PM): yay!
Shari1986 (11:27:56 PM): that's really cool!
Shari1986 (11:28:17 PM): it must be an old picture though, lol
Shari1986 (11:29:04 PM): I wonder if we could just get someone to help us get started, and then once we sort of know the pieces we could conduct ourselves
cellonaut (11:26:54 PM): I have an idea!
cellonaut (11:26:58 PM): What about Ray?
cellonaut (11:27:05 PM): He'd love this opportunity??
cellonaut (11:27:07 PM): !!
Shari1986 (11:29:32 PM): oooh, you're right!
Shari1986 (11:29:37 PM): that might be perfect
cellonaut (11:27:25 PM): Wouldn't it though??
Shari1986 (11:30:02 PM): it would! and I assume the board still has some contact info for him?
cellonaut (11:27:55 PM): he's on facebook too. ^^
Shari1986 (11:30:19 PM): haha
Shari1986 (11:30:20 PM): of course
Shari1986 (11:30:23 PM): everyone's on facebook
cellonaut (11:28:16 PM): actually, I searched conducting and he came up which reminded me
Shari1986 (11:30:57 PM): lol
Shari1986 (11:31:02 PM): well, we can definitely ask him
cellonaut (11:28:46 PM): ooooh, I'm so excited now!
Shari1986 (11:31:11 PM): once we know that we'll be able to do it
cellonaut (11:28:52 PM): it feels so real!
Shari1986 (11:31:13 PM): and have enough players
Shari1986 (11:31:14 PM): I know!
cellonaut (11:28:58 PM): ehhhhhh but that could take months!
Shari1986 (11:31:22 PM): haha
Shari1986 (11:31:39 PM): if it takes more than through sept or oct we're going to have problems
cellonaut (11:29:29 PM): true. but I want to ask him now!
cellonaut (11:29:34 PM): I want to start playing now!
Shari1986 (11:31:56 PM): haha
Shari1986 (11:31:58 PM): me too!
