one of the things i've missed the most, i think, that i haven't realized i missed until i got home was the simple pleasure of sitting outside on these warm summer nights. for much of the year, it's entirely too cold in new york for that to be possible, and when its warm enough, the courtyard is much too clogged with smoke and the surrounding buildings to see much (because, aside from smoking and studying, there is no acceptable reason for sitting in the carlyle courtyard all by your lonesome). i've missed my backyard, with its tangle of dying grasses and overgrown fruit trees, and the unruly tomato plants with vines reaching out everywhere in their slow campaign to dominate our yard. i've missed the warm light shedding from inside and the smells of dinner wafting out, the peacefully descending darkness. it's been lovely, just sitting outside and breathing in the warm night air, smelling so familiarly of dried stalks of grass and the salty, unmistakable scent of earth, and looking up at a sky full of blinking stars, softly lit by distant streetlamps.

i hope this summer is filled with lots of these nights. come sit outside and talk with me sometime :)
