Sometimes I do honestly wonder what the Stargate producers are thinking. I think there are two in particular who should just fire themselves right now because as far as I'm concerned they ran out of fresh ideas about 3 years ago.
I love Atlantis, I always will...but I'm starting to yearn for pre season 4 atlantis more and more. I miss Elizabeth, I miss Carson and Carter is just wrong. Putting Sam on Atlantis as a leader was just the worst idea ever. She's a part of SG-1 and she's a scientist, that's what she does best...she does not do the descision making, diplomatic, negotating thing well and as a character the chemistry she has with the other cast members is as bland as a spiceless curry. The relationship between John and Elizabeth was always something interesting to watch, they were friends as well as colleges and John would have done whatever it took to save Elizabeth (I think John would never have left Elizabeth to the replicators...even if he had he would have gone back there, as would Mckay, Ronon and Taylor). You don't get that same feeling of 'family' when Carter is around and I'm not sure you ever will. She's too set apart from the rest, too out of her comfort zone, it doesn't feel right.
But then she's been there, done that, bought the t-shirt and bled all over it. What situation is there that Carter has not been through or fixed? Everything that happens on Atlantis will share some similarity to some episode of SG-1 and even if it doesn't her character has been through every conceivable situation you could throw at her and even if she hasn't it will have happened to another member SG-1. Don't get me wrong I love Carter as a character, she was great on SG-1, but I feel Carter and Altantis are being ruined because of her presence. She's a badly fitting jigsaw piece.
Watching Mortal Coil last night made me realise just how much Elizabeth is missed...when she's there the chemistry is back, she might not do an awful lot on Atlantis, but her presence is the jigsaw piece that makes it all fit. She's the Janeway of Atlantis, and without the Janeway it will always be lacking something. I sware to god if the writers (I'm looking at you Joseph Malozzi) have killed her off in such a cold and impersonal manner, as some sort of after thought...then I will get angry...very...very angry! I'm still hoping against all hope that they'll bring her back for season 5...if they don't then I can't see how Atlantis can survive. I will be like the last two seasons of SG-1 Good, but never great, never as great as it once was or could be again.
I feel the same about Carson, Keller is alright...but she is no Carson Beckett. I miss the camerardry between Carson and Rodeny and I miss the warmth and the humour that he brought to the show. I don't see what the producers thought killing him off what do? I don't understand what they were trying to achieve, because I don't think they have achieved anything! Perhaps they went for the 7 of 9 rule in how to save a show and thought bringing Keller on would 'boost' the male viewing figures. Grrrrr!!!!!!! This makes me mad! So, so mad.
Also one last bone of contention...The Replicators. I disliked them on SG-1 and I practically loathe them on Atlantis. What the hell is wrong with the writers, that they cannot come up with a fresh new idea? Would it have been so hard to create an original bad guy? I loved the Genii and the Wraith are the ultimate bad guys! But I find the replicators predictable and boring...it feels like a case of been there done that, seen it all before. Plus the techno bable the replicators encur makes the episodes overly scientific and some of the humour of the show is lost (more episodes by Martin Gero please!!!)
But even though there are things about Atlantis that irk me, which there wasn't before they killed Carson. I still love the show...I look back at my favourite episodes and when it's good no TV show can beat it, but when it's bad you think back to how good it can be and you hope it will be once again. I really, really hope Weir isn't dead and I so hope they bring her back in season 5, or if they don't they at least remove Carter...I can't see how the show will get better if they don't.
Stupid writers/producers....PLEASE, PLEASE don't destroy my favourite show!!!!!!!!!!!!
