Ummm. Very negative comments up there. No need to be this mean O___o

I watch Eurovision systematically for the last few years, suffice it to say I could say a lot about every country. First of all, the English singing has been more or less a tradition for the past... decade. If not even longer than that. The fact that so many countries sang in their own language this year has made me so, so happy. The initial concept 50 years ago was that everyone would sing in their own language. But trends changed, and so did the contest. Now they're returning to that concept, which is really positive.

And well, being Greek, I can sort of explain the Greekness. First of all, the shirt... It's the guy's selling point, his body/dancing. You can't deny it, he sells it well. But I lol'd when he unbuttoned his shirt, and saw how it would ride up when he danced. Hilarious and sad, but true. Second, the image actually isn't that far from Hetalia's Greece. Trust me when I say Hetalia's Greece is SPOT ON, it's so characteristic of us that it's uncanny. We're lazy, like sex and partying, and appear stupid but we're really cunning underneath. Sakis is like our national pop star person, I think he's a shining image of what we are. For better or for worse, lol.

Anyway. I've seen better contests, but there were a lot of good songs this year.

i was posting in a slightly negative manner, but i don't mean harm ^^ they're more like those "WTF" reactions than actually not liking it at all? ^^; it's my first time watching eurovision, despite hearing about it for a few years, so i was getting my small dosage of much needed cultural shock :P

i thought it was really weird that a lot of the songs were in english, since i thought it was in a way supposed to be promoting your own country? :x it'd be weird if you sang in some other country's language @__@; i did hear they had bits and bobs of their own language in the songs tho :D

hahah i actually really liked greece's performance XD;; *sucker for the greece/germany type craizness* i always got the image of greeks being slow/lazy from hetalia, not the cunning bit :P then again, i haven't read a lot of ths strips and have been watching the anime a lot more ^^;

if every year's eurovision is like this, i don't think i'll mind sacrificing my internet for a week XD;;

Fair enough, though to me "WTF" sounds more negative than "WTF I THINK I LIKE IT" :P But that's just me I guess.

Yes that was the idea. But somewhere along the way they started singing songs in English so the rest of Europe could understand them, plus it was the rise of pop music in America so it was trendy and hip. So the "own language" bit kind of died out, only to start coming back again now. I'm positive that in the years to come there will be more traditional things, there was a LOT of tradition involved this year.

AHHH GREECE, WE WERE ON FIRE TONIGHT. The song sounds so boring in the recorded version, but when I saw the live performance I was like O___O *jawdrop* Dammit that man is good.
Haha, the details Himaruya has included in Greece's character are so chillingly accurate, I don't know how he knows @__@ I need to catch up with the anime, OTL

Yes, it's basically like this every year. It's been better in the past... 5 years, I'd say (my personal favourite years were 2005-2007), so many good songs that I still listen to. I hope it gets better from next year onwards too :)

it does start with a lot of WTFs, then end with "okay the song seems okay" a lot of the times, looking back XD;;;

i guess i'm going to enjoy the songs next year then, if they keep the traditional songs *__*

how can that song be boring?!?!? :| i should go find a recorded version and compare :x
i'm waiting for some characterization for HK... coz the only thing i really connect with HK is the japanese(chinese?)/english talk:x

you get to listen to the songs before yeah? @__@; like it's everyone sings the same thing during prelim/quarter finals etc, then cut it down to 25 countries, then the final, vote, results out by 12-ish? :x

hahahaha. for a first time watcher, i guess that's normal.

hopefully they will. even if they don't, there have been some AWESOME songs in the past that weren't traditional but were really good music/lyric-wise (eg. latvia 2005, russia 2006, belarus 2007) which i still listen to.

Last year's winner btw, Russia, had the most moving video/song ever, which is why they won.

Hahaha, boring greek song HERE PLZKTHX. I really thought it was so mediocre that it wouldn't get anywhere, but surprisingly he was really on fire in the semifinal so we got through.

pretty much, yeah. though this year due to my lack of tv (and time to follow what's going on online) I didn't really know the songs before the semifinals. but yeah in theory you hear them months before through promotion and stuff, you see the music videos, then it's the semis, then the finals, etc.

/late comment is late

i've actually heard of russia's song from last year!! i never thought i would've!! no wonder they won..

i think it's better just hear them for a few times, but then it'll be bad for songs that just grow on you. like finland's song this year
