hi there little livejournal buddies!!
i'm updating for the first time, i believe, in seven whole months. the lazy days of summer have once again drawn me back to livejournal posting, so i just wanted to say hello, and take this opportunity to talk about warped tour that happened to be today :)
so first of all, i didn't know i was going until last night in the early hours of the morning (natalie or kristin can attest to this fact because i kind of called them in the middle of the night). even though there were only a couple of bands on the bill that i was like 'oh my god i want to see them' about, i decided to go because i knew i would just feel like a teeny little part of me died inside if i missed my first warped tour since 2002. so, due to the fact that my always-vip-at-ever-show sister is living very far away for the summer, i actually bought my own concert ticket (gasp!) for 30 whole dollars!! i don't think i can remember the last time i paid to get into a concert, let alone that much. but it was totally cool because my oh so generous daddy gave me money. yay. so me, natalie, kristin and her boyfriend and poor anna who was in pain because of her wisdom teeth went together to comerica and spent the day outside for like 9 hours in the sweltering heat (and now my face happens to bear an uncanny resemblance to a burnt tomato, but that's beside the point). and by the way the layout this year was super great cuz they had most of the tents inside the arena where there was at least some shade and then the stages in the parking lot nicely spread out and stuff. oh, and when we were waiting in line to get in this guy came up to us to show us some books about buddhism and i totally remembered the same guy from warped '02 (the last time it was at comerica) cuz i started to walk away with a book after he handed it to me and he had to like chase me down and tell me the books actually weren't free and they were looking for donations. anyway, here's the order of who we saw (or listened to):
the early november
hellogoodbye (oh my god they are so flipping adorable and i love their music and they are so fun to see live)
the academy is
saves the day
billy talent! (ahh i had almost forgotten how much i loved them until they started playing and then the lead singer gave this adorable little spiel about how warped is really all about 'community and caring for one another' and how canadians and americans are like brethern and all. they played some amazing new songs and now i can't wait to get my hands on their new cd.)
the sounds (i was definitely the closest for their set so i got some pretty cool pictures and their music was super good. so good, in fact, that it inspired me to buy this really sweet tote bag from their merch booth. yay swedes.)
senses fail
and, ending the night was none other than....
thursday!
thursday, the band with whom i have always felt a special connection. why, you might ask. well, i'm pretty sure it's because they were the first band i really discovered for myself and then the first band i really loved. and since i wore my thursday shirt basically every day throughout high school and i used their lyrics in 2 separate projects in high school so people came to associate me with thursday and thursday with me. so during the set geoff was all like, 'we've been a band for 8 years, so we'd like to dedicate this next one (understanding in a car crash) to all you guys who saw us last time we were in this parking lot 4 years ago when it was the last show of the tour and i cracked my head open.' of course everyone in the crowd was all like wooo after he said that cuz people always cheer after basically anything any lead singer says (especially if it involves something gory like cracking your head open), but i was woooo cuz i was actually there, and i'm hardcore! haha.
oh, so here are some things geoff said (or did) that just reminded me why i love him:
- at one point he got into this story of a near-death experience where they almost crashed in a plane because geoff can never not get into some sappy story like that cuz he's such a drama queen lol
- i saw the gap in his teeth up close again and i was like aww i love you because that gap is possibly only rivaled by madonna's gap and that is very impressive indeed
- he talked about how tim the bassist was absent cuz his wife was giving birth and then he got into this thing where he was like 'and all these girls in the crowd, they'll be mothers and wives some day so treat them with respect,etc.." why, you might ask? because he's geoff rickely, that's why
- he talked about how we should see some other bands that were playing cuz 'that's real music and culture and don't let the media try to dictate to you you what to like and what culture is'
-then he was all like 'if you've never heard us before then go home and download our music for free because you shouldn't have to be rich to enjoy music and just that you guys listen to our music and care about it and enjoy is all i could ever ask from you.' aww, right?
- during some of the songs he did his adorable little michael jackson moves
so yeah maybe you can't really relate to all those unless you really love thursday, but basically i love geoff rickley because, well, he is just so geoff rickley.
yay ok i think that's all i wanted to say and now i'm tired so if you withdrew any amusement whatsoever from that extremely poor story telling of mine, then i am very happy.
goodnight :)
