Setting: Beyond the Movieverse AU
Characters: Kitty/Rogue/Bobby
Ratings/Warnings: All Ages
Notes: Beginning here, things diverge from the Movieverse. X3 never happened. Jean rose from Alkali Lake several months after X2, to be greeted by Magneto/the Brotherhood and a team of X-Men, both of whom wanted her, for entirely different reasons. She left with the X-men. Tensions have been heightened by the news of the cure for mutants, which has a 40% death rate for those who take it.
Summary: Rogue and Bobby reunite after a mission to retrieve Jean; almost immediately, they have a disagrement about the cure.
Rogue lifted her weary head. Staying awake, in control of Pyro, and worrying about how Jean and Scott could have brought themselves to actually kill someone, plus struggling with her own doubts about what was right and wrong, had worn her out completely.
She looked back over her shoulder at Piotr, effortlessly carrying the unconscious Johnny. They'd have to go to the medical lab before anything else, so that he and Jean could be cared for. "Professor," the southern girl said wearily, trying to concentrate on being heard. "Professor, we'ah back. Kin y'all meet us in medical? Some decisions gotta be made an' Ah know I ain't qualified foah 'em." Not even close, she added to herself. "Jean's heah, an' Pyro, and 'Roro's huht her leg somehow."
An' all I want is my boyfriend an' the dinneh I nevah got an' some tahm t'think. But she wasn't going to get eithah one any time soon, as Kitty phased through the ceiling and landed in a cat crouch on the floor not ten feet in front of her.
"Hiya, Rogue! Hiya, Peter!" Kitty’s fatigue went away when she saw who was being carried by the big Russian the the team leader. "Oh my god," she breathed, "is that really Jean?"
"'Spect so, Kitty," said Rogue wearily. "Gonna hafta let the Professor talk to 'em fust, though, so just ease back on yoah throttle for a minute." The time occurred to her, and she looked at the petite ballerina. "What ahe y'all doin' up so late now anyhow, gal?"
"I'm... uh... working on something for the Professor. I mean, really, it's for all of us, but the Professor and Mr;. Worthington thought it was a really good idea.... Disseminating information. You know. I can't really talk about it though. You should hear it from them. I don't really have the authority to tell you about it."
Rogue just raised an eyebrow. "Well, kin y'all eithah get the Professor oah come on with us to medical, Kitty? Ah'll be excited 'bout yoah project tomorrow, Ah promise."
When asked about her project, Kitty remembered that the X-men who'd been on a mission probably didn't know anything about the cure, yet, and her natural exuberance was tempered by really really not wanting to have to be the bearer of bad news. "I'm... uh... working on something for the Professor. I mean, really, it's for all of us, but the Professor and Mr.
Ah'll be excited 'bout yoah project tomorrow, Ah promise." She only wanted to get to Bobby, some food, and a shower, in that order. Then, some peace and quiet.
"Many things have happened, but with the discovery of Ms. Grey I believe it is much more good than bad, we should be cheerful, my friends," Colossus smiled at the two young ladies and the others as they passed, "however we must see what the Professor wishes us to do with our prodigal student here. I pray he will see the light of your reason, Rogue."
"Don't know how reasonable it is, Piotr; jist know people oughtta git a second chance. Know it deep down in mah gut." Wobbling a little from weariness, Rogue followed the team toward medical. "Kitty? The Professor?" As the petite mutant started to dash away through the walls, Rogue added, "An' d'y'all know wheah Bobby is?"
Kitty poked her head back through the wall, saying, "His room, I think. I hardly saw him at all after the news report." Before anyone could ask 'what news report,' she was off and running toward the Professor's office.
What news report, wondered Rogue, but Kitty was gone already. Good thing that gal ain't got supah-speed to go with that theah phasing, she thought abstractedly. She'd be a pure menace.
Kitty was going to tell Bobby that Rogue was back. She kinda thought he'd want to be around his untouchable girlfriend when she heard about the 'cure' for the first time. Kitty sighed a bit wistfully. It might be nice to have someone like Bobby as a boyfriend. Someone who cared like that, just for her.
Oh well.
She took a running jump at the ceiling and walls, heading for the kitchen. Kitty had lived in the mansion for over three years now, so finding her way through levels and rock and tunnels and actual mansion rooms and walls was easy. The harder part -though she was much better at it than when she'd been a kid just learning her powers- was not phasing through things she didn't want to phase through. That, and running "upward" on air!
Still, it didn't take long for her to arrive. Once there, she started a big pot of coffee brewing, and then ran up the stairs to the boys' dorm, planning to be back in the computer lab fully prepped with caffeine as soon as she could.
Kitty tapped quietly on Bobby's door, hoping he wasn't too deeply asleep. "Bobby," she whispered loudly. "Bobby, Rogue's back." He was so cute. Rogue was very lucky.
Bobby was opening the door just as Kitty was talking. He had heard the Blackbird's engines as it came for its landing in the hanger that was underneath the basketball court. "Yeah thanks Kitty," he said quite in a hurry, not mentioning that he had already heard the big plane. He didn't waste time with any small talk and made his way to one of the express elevators.
"You're welcome," she said, as he brushed past her and hopped on the elevator. As the doors swished shut behind him she muttered, "Well, someone's certainly in a hurry!" She sighed. Yep, no doubt about it, Rogue was lucky. She sank through the floors to the kitchen, making sure to stay in public hallways as she did.
It didn't take Bobby to long to see that everyone was in the medical bay, from the size of the gathering crowd. He wondered what was wrong, had Rogue gotten hurt, or had one of the others? He just couldn't believe his eyes, there was Dr.Grey laying on the examination table. This did not make any sense to him.
As Rogue was still waiting wearily to be dismissed, the most important part of her wish list walked into the med lab, met her eyes, and then stared at Jean's body there on the examining table. She couldn't blame him one little bit for that! And she felt better just having Bobby there, for true. She'd feel even better if she could wallow in a big, comforting hug from him, but that would have to wait until the Professor dismissed her... or possibly kept her on duty.
Pyro's stolen power danced and flickered on her palm, flaring a bit at her emotional response to seeing her boyfriend. She sent him an intense look full of complicated things, but foremost was just how glad she was to see him, after this long and worrisome day. "Hey theah," she mouthed, and turned her attention back to the Professor. Heck, Professor Xavier might not even need her anymore; it was obvious even to a non-telepath that the biggest questions on his mind revolved around Jean right now.
Bobby had turned back just in time to see Rogue mouth her hello to him. It caused him to smile. A smile that as much as he wanted to didn't last to long. As soon as the Professor finished talking to her and gave her permission to leave, he was going to have to tell her. It was better if it came from him then someone else.
The Professor listened to what Rogue had to say, and warned her that they were going to have to discuss the situation in greater depth on the morrow, but he did excuse her for the evening. Relieved beyond measure, she snuffed the flame in her hand, turned all of Pyro's incendiary devices over to the Professor for safekeeping, and went to Bobby's side at last.
"Hey theah," she said again, out loud this time. "Let's get on outta heah; we'ah kinda in the way now, Ah think." She smiled at him, just happy to see his face.
"Sure." He said with a smlight smile as he motioned for her to lead the way. "There's something I need to tell you anyway, and it's better if we do it in private." he added.
Behind them, Storm's voice started a narration of the day's events for those who had not traveled to Alkali Lake, but they were quickly out of earshot.
Pulling her glove back onto the hand that had held flame for the entire ride back, she walked sideways for a minute, looking up at Bobby. "As long as it ain't a break-up speech," she said, half-serious and all joking. "It's been a rough day and Ah don't think Ah could take the whole world goin' sideways again just now." Her eyes flicked back to the med lab, where Jean still lay as she secured the glove with a tug. "Not befoah some suppeh, anyways. Never did get any."
"Well I told you to eat when you had the chance. But you said you weren't hungry." he reminded her as he took her now gloved hand in his as they left medical. "Do you want me to meet you in the kitchen while you change outta your uniform, or do you want me to wait for you?" he asked her.
"Yes, suh," she said, wrinkling her nose up at him. "Next time Ah'll eat even when Ah ain't hungry." She curled her fingers around his, wishing, as always, that they could really touch. "I'd just as soon eat now, then Ah can change an' fall into bed all of a piece afteh a showah. Ah'm tired, Bobby. An' some upsettin' things happened out theah today too. Let's just go straight to the kitchen, all raht?"
"Fine with me." he told her. He was just as tired as she, only difference was that she was in combat, and he was exhausted from over taxing his powers outside by the lake. Once they were in the kitchen he went and got her a plate, some silverware, and a glass while she figured out what she was going to eat.
Rogue peered into the refrigerator, and finally just did the easiest thing: sandwich fixings and a big apple. She grabbed some celery and a carrot stick, too, and turned back to see Bobby had gotten out a plate and cutlery for her. "Thanks," she said with pleased smile, and took her food to the table to assemble. Before she started, though, she snapped a bite from the apple to keep her going.
"You're welcome," he said as he blew on her glass, immediately frosting it over. Then he took a seat at the counter and watched her as she continued to put her sandwich together.
"Nahce," she said, laughing at his trick. "Been practicin' the fine control, huh?" It took less than no time to put things together, and to fill her glass with a decaffeinated soda. Not that anythin's gonna keep me awake tonight, she thought to herself. Plate ready, she took a stool next to Bobby's at the counter.
"Aw, shucks; that's nothing." He said as he placed his hand on the counter next to her glass and concentrated. Slowly he started to raise his hand, when he was done there stood a perfect replica of a rose inside of a vase next to her drink. Much more detailed then the ice flower he had made for her on the day he had met her. He then looked at her with a smile, but the truth was he was tired as hell. That little stunt had taken energy out of him that he didn't have right now. He'd have a hell of a headache in the morning, but it would be worth showing off for her.
Oh, Bobby!" Her eyes lit with wonder and love. "It's beautiful," she added softly, reaching out a careful forefinger to run it over the edge of a perfect flaring petal.
"Now that's control." He told her as he smiled.
"Ah'd say it is, at that," she smiled back. "But we didn't have to be alone foah that, though it's nahce to be with just you... what's going on that had y'all looking so worried when you came into the med lab?"
He suddenly became agitated and squirmed in his stool. He didn't know any other way to say this, except to say it. "There's a lab, that has announced that they have come up with an antibody for the mutant X gene.... a cure they say."
Rogue froze, her sandwich halfway to her mouth. Carefully, she set it back down on her plate, and then turned to look at him. "A... a cure? You mean, to... to get rid of mutant powehs?" A spark of hope began to blaze in her eyes, growing to an eager fire. "Is it true?"
"That's what they would have us and others believe." He told her. "But Kitty found some information that shows that the not many mutants survive the cure."
"Not many... how many is not many? What kinds o'percentages ahe we talkin' about, Bobby? Just how risky is it?" To be able to touch someone... to share a hug or a kiss... to not just say love, but to show it! It would be like a miracle!
"Less than forty percent.... Those that it didn't cure died." he told her.
"So many...." Rogue breathed out in shock. "But the ones it wuhked on - they weah noahmal?"
"Supposedly. The Professor is going to this Lab with Mr. Worthington and some of the others tomorrow to investigate their claims." He told her. The tone in his voice was undeniable; he was upset. Not sure if it was because of this whole idea of a cure which made it seem as if they weren't normal. Or if he was upset with her, because she didn't seem to understand what he was trying to tell her. "You're not thinking about trying to take this cure are you?"
Stung by his tone, Rogue jerked her chin upward. "An' why shouldn't Ah?"
The look on his face showed nothing but shock. "Why?! Didn't you just hear me? You could die." he replied. "Second of all there's nothing wrong with you; you are normal. You don't need to be cured."
Rogue didn't know whether to scream or laugh. Or maybe cry. Crying sounded pretty good raht about then. "It is not noahmal to be totally unable to kiss mah boyfriend because I maht kill him," she choked out. "It ain't noahmal to put a person into a coma with a touch. It ain't noahmal to have to weah gloves all the time just so I don't huht someone by accident, Bobby."
"You'll learn how to control your power someday, it's only a matter of time." He told her "You haven't been here as long as some of us have, you need to give it time." he added.
"An' if Ah don't, what then? So fah the only thing that does wuhk is time… an' the longeh I touch someone, the worse they get huht. That's no way to live… an' if theah's a choice, it's mine to make. Not y'alls, Bobby. Mine." Fighting back the tears that stung her eyes, she carefully picked up her plate and glass… and left the ice rose in its ice vase behind.
"Ah got some thinkin' to do, Bobby." She bit her lip. "Ah won't do nothin' without tellin' y'all first, but Ah… Ah gotta be alone. Ah'm -tired." She turned to leave the kitchen, carrying plate and glass, and climbed wearily up the three flights of stairs to her room. Anothah hahd thing to think about. An' heah she'd thought nothin' would keep her awake. Showed what she knew.
