House-Sitting

Feb 02, 2012 16:51

I am bursting with the need to share this with someone, but the fact that there's no one here is what created this beauty. So I just walked the 1/2 mile down the driveway for the mail, house-sitting for ma. Today is beautiful, sunny, almost 40 degrees. So anyhow, this is what I've got:

The sky is a brilliant winter-blue with the contrast of normally-white poplar branches golden in the afternoon sun. There is silence but for my boots crunching over snow and the highway truckers three miles away. I inhale deeply the scent of the hay-bales and of the damp, cold forest, the smell of wood and woodsmoke. The dog runs off into the field that's only half-covered with snow due to the uncommonly-warm weather, and she blends in, that tawny shade of dead grass and tree-shadows.

Not as good as it was while I was out walking, but there it is, a fair rendition, if I do say so myself.
