Remember the Christmas Leadership one-shot I had been planning? It took me a while to write, but I managed to finish it either on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. So I'm gonna copy it from Google Drive to here. It's cliche-y and corny but whatever.
Title: The Perfect Present
Type: one-shot
Words: 2115
Rating: PG-13
'Where the heck is he?' Yixing wonders, checking his watch and tapping his foot nervously. He is sure that he's annoying the other customers in the cafe but he doesn't really care.
Christmas is right around the corner, in five days to be exact, but he and Jongin have yet to find a gift for Kris, their very good and very smart friend, who allows them to copy his homework answers and stays sober to be the designated driver and lets them crash his place for the night when they are too drunk to function. Kris is literally an angel to them, and to show their gratitude Yixing and Jongin want to get him the perfect gift. But with school and jobs in the way, and fine, girls, parties, and clubs as well, they have lost track of time and are now left with five days to find a gift for Kris.
The bells hanging on the door of the cafe jingle and Yixing looks up to see Jongin waddling in in his penguin costume. Yixing almost spits out the tea he's been drinking. He has known that Jongin has a part-time job but he never knew what job it was, exactly, since Jongin keeps it a secret.
"I came from work, okay," Jongin explains with a pointed glare at Yixing as he plops into the seat across from the latter. Yixing stops laughing as he realizes he's the only one in the cafe laughing at Jongin in a penguin costume.
Yixing clears his throat out of embarrassment and takes a sip of his tea before asking an annoyed Jongin, "Have you thought of anything?"
Jongin's brows furrow. "Thought about what? What are you talking about?"
Yixing has to hold himself back from smacking Jongin's penguin head. "Kris' Christmas present? Don't tell me you've forgotten!"
"Ahhh, right! And of course I didn't forget, how could I?" Jongin fibs. "But unfortunately, I haven't come up with anything. Since we finally have the chance to meet up like this, let's brainstorm some ideas."
He lets out a sigh of relief when Yixing buys into his lie then nods in agreement. Yixing takes out a pen and paper from his backpack. "Okay, what's the perfect gift for Kris Wu? It has to be something that he would love."
"Love...what does Kris love?" Jongin scratches his penguin head. "What could he possibly love more than school?"
"Tsk, this is no time to joke around, Jongin," Yixing chides. His eyes suddenly light up and he pounds the table in excitement. "I know! How about Suho?!"
Jongin jumps up, excited as well. "Yes, we should get Kris his crush for Christmas! That would be the perfect present! He would definitely love him!" Jongin slowly sits back down when reality sinks in. "But how would we gift Suho to Kris?"
Yixing waves his hand like it's no big deal. He smiles his conniving smile and says, "Easy. All we have to do is persuade Suho to follow along with our plan."
Jongin doesn't even bother to ask what Yixing has in mind.
"You guys, I don't think this will work," Suho says, as he examines the box that Yixing and Jongin brought over to his apartment. "I mean, I'm pretty sure I'm too tall to fit comfortably."
Yixing tries to hold back his laughter but hearing Jongin's laughs causes him to laugh too. They double over in a fit and Jongin almost feels tears in his eyes.
Suho stares at them, confused. "What's so funny?" he demands, looking back and forth between the two of them.
Their laughter dies down as Jongin waves his hand as if to say 'nevermind, it's nothing.' Yixing inspects the box again for the 50th time. "Don't worry, you'll fit. Just climb in and you'll see. This should be quick and painless."
Suho hesitates. "I will just be taken to Kris, correct? You guys aren't tricking me into some sort of trap, are you? I don't want to open my eyes to see that I've been sold into slavery or something."
Jongin rolls his eyes. "We didn't even think about doing that, thanks for the idea," he says sarcastically.
Yixing crosses his arms over his chest. "Just get in, Suho!"
Suho tentatively steps into the box and lowers himself in. He sits down and crosses his legs and there's still enough room for him to wiggle around. He closes the lid to make sure it can properly close, then opens the lid and moves his feet around. "Oh," Suho begins, embarrassed. "I guess the box is big enough after all."
As Suho hops out of the box, Yixing and Jongin look at each other and smile knowingly. Yixing places the lid back on the box and picks it up to take it back to their apartment to decorate it. "Alright, thanks for everything, Suho. We'll see you in a few days."
Jongin claps Suho on the back and rushes over to open the front door for Yixing. "Are you guys sure you don't need my help decorating it?" Suho questions worriedly.
"Nah, we got it," Jongin replies. "All you gotta do is prepare yourself."
Yixing guffaws but he wants to hit Jongin for smart-talking.
They exchange goodbyes and Suho waves as they disappear down the hallway.
Yixing and Jongin stand in their living room, gazing down at their finished product.
"Isn't this a bit too girly?"
"What do you mean, 'too girly'? Don't you know that pink is Kris' favorite color? It's fine the way it is."
Jongin looks at Yixing with an incredulous expression. "You're kidding with me, right. Pink is not Kris' favorite color."
Yixing shrugs. "I'm not kidding. He told me himself."
Jongin crosses his arms and continues to look at Yixing.
"Fine, he didn't tell me. I accidentally-on-purpose read it in his journal," Yixing admits.
"He has a journal? Man, that guy is even more of a wimp than I thought," says Jongin, shaking his head.
Yixing picks up the decorated box to bring it over to Suho's apartment. "Come on, let's go."
He and Jongin make their way to Suho's, where the Christmas party will be held in a little less than an hour.
When they arrive and knock on the door, it's not Suho who greets them but a smiley Kyungsoo in an apron. "Hey, you guys are early." He notices the box that Yixing is carrying, and points at it with a spatula. "What's that for?"
"Oh, um, nothing," Yixing answers while Jongin tells him with a smirk, "You'll see."
Kyungsoo shrugs. "Okay." He turns to head back to the kitchen.
Yixing carries the box to Suho's room with Jongin following right behind him. They knock once, twice, but hearing no reply they gently open the door, only to see Suho nowhere in sight.
Yixing almost drops the box in anger.
"Where the fuck is he?" Jongin shouts, pulling at his hair.
"Who? Suho?" Kyungsoo asks from the kitchen. "He's in the bathroom!"
Yixing and Jongin look at each other. "Oh, right. We should have checked in there," Jongin says sheepishly.
They head to the bathroom but before they could even knock, the door opens and Suho pops his head out. "I'm not ready yet!" he whispers.
"Why aren't you ready yet? And why are you whispering?" Yixing questions. Suho had known about this in advance, and since they knew how much of a perfectionist he can be, they gave him a few days to prepare.
Jongin points at the box in Yixing's arms. "We even finished decorating this and you know how lazy we can be!"
Suho shakes his head, and the bell on his Santa hat jingles. "No, I'm ready, but I'm not ready ready. I don't know if I can do this."
"B-but you like Kris, don't you?" Jongin asks gently. "This shouldn't be difficult. We'll help you, Suho."
Yixing nods in agreement. "Yeah, we'll help you so you can do this. Let's get you set up before Kris arrives."
They make their way to the living room to help Suho into the box. Kyungsoo steps out from the kitchen to watch them set up and chuckles to himself.
"I like how you guys used Kris' favorite color to decorate this box," Suho says right as Yixing is about to put the lid on.
"Wait, how do you know pink is his favorite color?" Yixing asks curiously.
Suho shrugs nonchalantly. "He told me himself."
"Oh." Yixing wishes he had thought to ask Suho instead of snooping around Kris' room to discover his journal, in which he read things he wishes he hadn't. Yixing recalls some of the lines in Kris’ journal and shivers. Who would have known that under that smart, goody-two-shoes exterior lies a pervert.
Yixing shakes his head to clear his mind of these thoughts and puts the lid on the box.
Jongin pats the lid and says to Suho reassuringly, “It won’t be that long! Kris will be here in no time. We’ll be right here, Suho.”
Kris arrives ten minutes later, with his group of friends in tow. Everyone greets each other and shakes hands, most having met each other before. Kyungsoo, having finished his cooking, takes off his apron and joins the rest in the living room. Jongin helps him pass out drinks, and Yixing helps get the platter of cookies and brownies around the room. They try to distract everyone from noticing the festive pink box in the corner of the living room.
As a line forms in the kitchen for seconds of the soup Kyungsoo made, Yixing taps Kris on the shoulder and tells him to follow him. Yixing leads him over to the box, next to where Jongin is already standing waiting.
“What’s this?” Kris asks, peering at the box. He crosses his hands over his chest. “Is this another one of your just-to-make-a-laugh-out-of-Kris gifts?”
Yixing and Jongin shake their heads. “No, we’re serious about this gift,” Yixing says.
They both shout “Merry Christmas!” and, as if on cue, Suho pops out of the box, the end of his Santa hat flopping around his face.
Kris is so taken aback he doesn’t know what to say. He covers his mouth with his hands. It takes him a moment to recollect himself and gently ask Suho, “What? You’re my gift?”
Suho nods hesitantly, embarrassed and fearing that Kris didn’t like him.
When Kris removes his hands from his face, Suho could finally see the smile on his face. Suho couldn’t felt any more relieved. Maybe Kris did like him!
“Y-you’re the perfect present, Suho,” Kris says, and Suho smiles back at him. They look up to see mistletoe hanging above their heads, courtesy of Jongin.
“Now you guys have to kiss!” Jongin exclaims, and without looking around to see if anyone is watching, Kris pecks Suho right on the lips.
Cheers and applauding sound out behind them. Kris slowly turns around to see that everyone at the party has gathered to watch them. He feels his cheeks warming up and he tries to hide his face with his hands.
Suho climbs out of the box and pokes Kris on the back. “Turn around, Kris, it’s my turn,” he says softly.
“Turn for what?” Kris asks as he turns back around to face Suho.
“Time for this,” Suho replies, right before he get on his tippy-toes and plants a kiss on Kris’ lips.
Kris looks up to see if the mistletoe is hanging above them but there is none. “Hey, where’s the mistletoe?” he demands to know.
“Right here,” Jongin sing-songs, waggling the mistletoe from behind the crowd.
“Hey!” Kris shouts, playfully lunging for Jongin. Everyone laughs merrily.
The rest of the presents are exchanged among the partygoers, and Yixing pops the champagne and apple cider, while Kris and Suho share a drink and exchange indirect kisses and lingering touches until the party ends.
Suho sends everyone home with leftover cookies and brownies, and Kyungsoo helps him clean up before he leaves. Suho waves goodbye to Kyungsoo and closes the door, only to turn around and faceplant into a broad chest. Suho steps back and looks up to see Kris gazing down at him with a slight smile on his face.
Suho gasps. “What are you still doing here? I thought you went home already. Here, let me help you.” He turns around to open the front door for Kris.
But Kris places a hand on his shoulder to stop him. “I thought I would stay the night,” Kris explains in a gentle tone.
And Suho turns back to look at Kris with a smile, because he understands.
