May 06, 2005 01:00

So the Zombie King and I just returned from viewing the rough cut of Serenity. I'll do the long, spoileriffic stuff in another post, but just a bit on the mood and experience.

Our saga begins with an all-IT meeting at O'Dark Thirty )

Extreme envy here.

And this:

We had dinner reservations at 6:30. On the way, the ZK expressed fear that there would be costumes in the crowd. I pointed out my stylish brown coat and he rolled his eyes.

I admit it, I have fandom fear. One of the primary reasons despite my rabid geekness I've only attended two cons in my entire life, both for MST3K. (Although I did meet my wife at the second one.)

I am proud of my geekness. In fact, I am still waiting for my "Geeks have more fun" written in Elvish (or Klingon) bumper sticker.

That being said, the one con I went to I found very unsettling. While I had a great time with the friends I met up with(your wife being one of them), I kept feeling like I was at a family reunion with very embarassing relatives.

The metaphor is probably wholly inadequate, but sometimes I think of the costume-wearing fandom the way a black person might think of someone sitting on the side of the road wearing an Aunt Jemima outfit and enjoying a nice meal of watermelon and fried chicken.

I still want to get one of those Star Trek TNG Communicator badges for my nursing uniform, though. I like the idea of pausing in the middle of a patient assessment, hitting the badge with authority and saying "Computer, give me all the information you have on hypertension."
