Though I've had so many turning points it's getting hard to say.
(It shouldn't be hard to tell you.)
They come flashing in like Lancelot, all chivalry and shield,
And then one black-armoured hour spreads the guts across the field.
No good to manufacture them, the weaklings just arrive.
I need a turning point to keep me salt and sure alive.
Stepping up to a morn when you wish you'd never been born,
And it's one step forward, two steps back.
Go in thought, go in prayer, but there's just one way that you'll get anywhere,
And it's one step forward, two steps back.
By a fluke, or design, every time you try and straighten that line,
Then it's one step forward, two steps back.
Go in peace, go in wrath, there's no earthly way of you missing the path
Cause it's one step forward, one step forward and two steps back:
The dreaded one step.
One path of life: slowly unfurled: it's the oldest metaphor in the world.
And it's one step forward, two steps back.
It'll take quite a while with the knack we have of extending the mile
With this "One step forward, two steps back."
All the weirdness, all the doubt, in an X-box world I would wipe them out.
One step forward, two steps back.
And the traps to trip me as I waltz by, in an X-box world I would fly, fly, fly,
And instead it's one step forward, two steps back.
Pax vobiscum, pace unto you.
Pace, pace, one step tomorrow-ward.
This world is at a turning point each instant of the day.
When the stars arise we bless the skies and close our eyes to pray.
(It shouldn't be hard to tell you.)
Then we ask the God of mystery, deliverance, and peace,
Would you just remind us gently why the questions never cease.
Our questioning turns heart to fire, the fire turns to song.
The song becomes the turning point to show me I was wrong.
One step tomorrow-ward, one step forward and don't look back!
Don't look back! Don't look back!
I hope this is a turning point."
