I love Uhura as a kickass character. I remember being slightly annoyed at her during the Classic series.
Khan was exactly that. All we knew about him was what we already knew from his backstory. Nothing else.
On Doctor Who, the Valeyard is the first guess seeing the episode given that he was actually mentioned by Dr Simeon. But I'm not making any guesses because there are just too many possibilities:
- The Other or some other kind of Pre-Doctor version from before he took on the persona of The Doctor we know. Maybe he did something horrible and took on the name of The Doctor to redeem himself
- Younger version of the Hartnell Doctor before he became the Doctor
- Older version of the McGan Doctor aged during/because of the Time War
- A totally different regeneration either pre or post Eleven that didn't take on the name of the Doctor
- The Valeyard
- The last regeneration of the Doctor, the one that died on Trenzalore.
All of the are plausible, except for the last one because the Doctor seemed to recognize him from the past. I'm also not fond of different regeneration theory.
I also got a feeling from my first or second viewing that Trenzalore was the place where the Timelords were burried, or where their tombs were created since they wouldn't have bodies after the end of the Time War. But then the Doctor did seem to give the impression it is a place from his future, so this is unlikely.
I was less annoyed at Uhura during the classic series and more annoyed with the fact that the woman was basically just the starship version of the secretary/eye candy/token female. I didn't mind her character much, though.
