I had the opportunity to meet two different types of doctors today, and the contrast between them couldnt be more stark.

Dr T is one of the few doctors whom I've seen who actually look up at patients and say good afternoon to each and every single one of them. It sounds ludicrous, but more often than not patients walk into the room while the doctor is bent over the previous case file scribbling away furiously, and the poor patient sits down awkwardly feeling like he's interrupting something important. Though the huge pile of cases meant there was scarcely time for interaction, at least Dr T took the effort to talk to patients respectfully and smile at them.

That was in rather stark contrast to the other few drs who were guffawing away at their ipad games two cubicles away, and according to C, made a snide remark when a poor uncle said he could not afford the prescribed medication. Why do doctors think they're such great people?><  I'm sure they're all pretty nice people and certainly mind-blowingly intelligent, but what gives you the right to treat people like a bunch of case files to be cleared just so that they can be free enough to proceed to discuss about cars and stocks? Zzz.

I went for healthserve for the first time in the evening, and was really struck by how the doctors worked. Dr G happened to be there with a few MOs, who really took the time to chat with migrant workers and find out about their concerns and needs. I recall a doctor in my ortho posting who berated a foreign worker whom he deemed to be malingering in rather rude terms, shut his case file and asked him to return to work. I guess I am not always being fully objective, but at least the docs at healthserve did the workers the simple favour of treating them like a fellow human being. I guess for me,  I kinda found much more security being buried in writing prescriptions on sticky labels than stepping out to strike a conversation with a completely random stranger. It's something I should get over soon!

Oh wells, just some food for thought there. Opthalmo is turning out to be rather interesting though, the eyes are indeed a window to the soul (:
