Our First Trip into Town.

Temp. -13

After breakfast in the dining hall today we decided to take advantage of our curiosity and the clear skies. We bundled up and called a cab to take us to Walmart. Leaving The Inn we were surprised to find beautiful mountains surrounding what seemed to be the entire Post. It was around 10:30am and the sun was just peeking over the landscape. I found myself in awe of the gorgeous colors. I've never seen a sky light up in bright pink the way it does here in Alaska. What a beautiful background for the gray and snow-covered white trees lining the roadside. Huge black ravens fly through the snow making quite a scene. Everything seems to be out of a fairytale or romantic mystery novel.

We got a bit of a shock arriving at Walmart in Fairbanks. I thought all Walmarts pretty much looked the same (huge blue buildings). Not here. We found a rather small brown brick store. Lol- we were even more shocked to find out they had no grocery store. It wasn't a Super Walmart, just a very small complex claiming to be a familiar area. Rats.

Don't think that stopped us from spending most of the day there though. :) We got our photographs developed (wish I could post them), ate yummy toasted Subway sandwiches, and bought like $150 worth of DVDs to keep us busy this week. Such titles as: Spiderman, Beetle Juice, Finding Nemo, The Lion King, The PageMaster, and a few others. I can tell we are going to have quite a collection by the time our 3 year tour here is over. ;)

After leaving Wallyworld we walked to the PX (not fun in -13 snow). Geoff had a blast playing on the indoor playground though. What a great thing to have here. I wish there weren't so many older kids on it. :P Before we left we picked up a coffee ice cream cake for Vin's Birthday. It was really freaking great.

Now I'd better get back upstairs to see that he gets a good "present" *hubba-hubba".
