Summary: What's going on in Mr. Gold's mind when he polishes the silver in his shop.
Shine, turn, shine, turn. A clock ticks and is echoed by another in the opposite cobwebbed corner. Desperate leaves flatten themselves against the window only to be torn away again. Shine, turn. A car passes by.
Done, pick up another. Shine, turn. The glow from a handful of old lamps zig-zags through the glass unicorns. It glances then on the gold sleeve garters against black silk. Off the tower... she died. A pain shoots up his leg and into his lower back. He hisses, holds his breath; shine, turn. His heart is supposed to be empty, but it's so very heavy.
The cloth slithers like a snake over the silver. Revolution, repetition, hypnosis. A gust of strong wind rattles the front door, the little bell whispers. Belle. Power was potent and could drive the strongest to madness. He felt so brave, but he was still just a coward; a coward with a home full of treasures and a single chipped tea cup.
Why did you come back? Shine, turn. He was not unhappy, not then. All the trinkets in all the realms could not bring the same smile to his lips. War was a demanding mistress, struggling always to claim the high ground. Had he won the battle? He wondered if she had even been a battle to win.
Sunset fractures the fortress of white noise. Dust in the air glitters like hundreds of whirling fairies. He squints against the humming light. He'd get used to it. Shine, turn; the argent vessel slips. He catches it just in time. He'd caught her too.
Shine, turn. Something in the mirrored silver resembles an angel in sky blue. Stop.
Why do you polish things?
To forget.
But it doesn't work.
