A friend asked me to list my favorite tv characters and why.
I guess it's even too easy to say that my top character is Dean Winchester.
Why? In few words because he is one of those characters with some depth. His thoughts, his feelings have been explored and deepened. His actions are strongly supported by his thoughts on them.
Then I have some other characters and even though I love them so much, none has been written as well as Dean.
Their shows are probably more consistent than SPN but their psychological introspection is not.
Whom I am talking about?
Speaking of the most well known: Alec McDowell, Angel, Fox Mulder, Lee Adama, Kara Thrace, Jack Bauer
Alec (and his psycho twin Ben) could have been awesome. They were for me, but the writers didn't really give them a chance. So I guess it's all because of Jensen ability to make a character live that we still remember and miss them. Especially Alec.
Angel, maybe the most well written one. Whedon gave him a lot. He was dark, mature, with a mission to accomplish but I felt sometimes, he could have been investigated a little more.
Fox Mulder, my first love. Really when I was younger I loved him to bits. As much as I love Dean now. But the show overcome Fox and he became a plot device for the story Carter wanted to tell us. Just my opinion of course.
Lee Adama...damn it feels like Alec but I blame BSG writers more because they did actually have the time to give this character a solid structure. Instead they played with him, they led him wherever they wanted. As if each writer wanted to write a different story for Lee. I liked he was described as a guy who sometimes does norally questionable things sometimes, but I think they should have given us the reasons behind it. More than they did. I think they never gave him the chance to show himself as the good person he was. I love love Lee as I love Alec, more for the potential they had as characters than for what I have really seen on screen.
They both needed to be developed more.
Kara Thrace. I loved how they wrote her till S3, then they screwed up with her in S4. Making her a messenger of the Gods (better bringing her back from death only because she had to be a kind of avatar showing the road to the Earth)...it's like they would say us that Dean is Micheal. No thanks. They were already special, they don't need some supernatutal device to become interesting.
Not to mention what they did to Kara/Lee.
Jack Bauer. 24 is too quick to let the writers spend time on Jack personal drama, but, I have to admit, they developed it pretty well. At least we know the motivations and we have some backgrounds.
I consider BSG the best show among these, considering the mythology and how they balnced the personal stories with the mytharch but I blame them for not giving some characters the depth they deserve.
SPN has the same problem. They are neglecting Sam and right now they have done some damages to Dean too, but Dean is easier to fix.
Dark Angel is the more excusable, Alec had only one season, then the show was caneclled.
Yeah some ramblings...love my characters too much!
