Alec finally returned to the dorms when Mr Winchester had decided there was nothing left for them to look for on foot. Alec was going to go check on Sam while Mr Winchester contacted his own information network for whatever they might be able to offer.
Alec didn't want to check on Sam, except for the faint possibility that he'd managed to find something helpful. Still, he wasn't sure he could see Sam without wanting to hit him. Knocking gently on the door, Alec hoped Dawn was there - at least then he'd at least have a witness as to good reason for physical assault.
