I didn't think it was possible for me to have any less respect for the entire Red Sox organization than I already did...
**RED SOX EARN A FEW ERRORS OFF THE FIELD WITH BIZARRE BEHAVIOR**
By Mark Saxon, STAFF WRITER
BOSTON -- Apparently, desperation has made the Boston Red Sox turn to some wacky behavior. Some of the Oakland A's aren't laughing.
While Ted Lilly was in the game, a handful of Red Sox bench players stood on the top step of the dugout with his name spelled across their backs in giant letters with athletic tape. That got the fans to chanting "Lilly! Lilly!" Not that the A's left-hander minded: He pitched one of the best games of his life.
But the A's considered those tactics bush league, at best.
"That's some stupid (stuff) to do," A's catcher Ramon Hernandez said.
Most of the A's -- including Lilly -- said they were unaware of what the Boston players were doing. Told of it, Mark Ellis said, "That's stupid, if you ask me. If that's what they want to do, fine, but it's just kind of silly."
It wasn't just the taunting of Lilly that may have raised the emotional stakes for Game 4 this afternoon. After Trot Nixon hit the game-winning home run off A's youngster Rich Harden, TV cameras caught Boston starter Derek Lowe -- who also pitched brilliantly -- running across the field and making an obscene gesture at the A's bench.
Even before the game, the Red Sox were displaying bizarre behavior. At least 15 of them shaved their heads to try to change their luck, down 0-2 in the series. The ringleader of the shaved-head movement was first baseman Kevin Millar, and those who follow the Red Sox daily see the team's flippant behavior Saturday as stemming from his influence.
Millar's pet saying -- one that has caught on at Fenway Park -- is "Cowboy up."
Worst of all from the Red Sox's perspective was reliever Byung-Hyun Kim gesturing obscenely to the fans -- many of whom were booing him -- during pregame introductions. The Red Sox issued an apology for Kim after the game. ***THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITES, LOL. BK FLIPPING OFF THE SELF PROCLAIMED "BEST FANS IN BASEBALL." HAHAHAHA!***
"It was an instant, reflexive reaction that I regret," Kim said in the statement. "I appreciate the passion our fans have for baseball in Boston; all of us depend on them for their support. I am very sorry." ***OH CRY US A RIVER BK."***
The game was ugly on the field -- six combined errors set a division series record, and yet those weren't the most unsightly things going on. ***YOU CAN SAY THAT AGAIN.***
