Guys, please pass this on...The whole situation makes me sick:
Our friend, Chris McKee, was assaulted on Fry Street in December 2005. He kissed his friend goodbye and heard people shouting homophobic remarks. He was then followed to his car and was physically assaulted by two men. When he tried to get into his car, they prevented him from closing the door and kicked him in his thigh.
His defense lawyer insisted that Denton's judges and jury would NOT be sympathetic and that he should just ask for the minimum punishment.
What happened to Chris is a hate crime and a slap on the wrist is not acceptable. Now, 6 months later, he has a court date and is pushing for a Class A Misdemeanor. His trial is Monday, Oct 23rd at 11am and continues Tuesday, Oct 24th at 11am.
HERE'S HOW YOU CAN HELP:
On Monday at 9:45am, an hour before the trial, Chris's supporters are going to be gathering in front of the Courthouse on McKinney to rally for his cause. CBS, the Denton Record Chronicle, and other media is scheduled to interview Chris before the trial and he NEEDS OUR HELP! Bring your signs, your friends, and your compassion!
**UPDATE: The DA tried to dismiss the case because Chris' last name was misspelled on one of the documents. Chris fought it, and the DA told him that he can either drop the case and try it again on a later date, or he can show up on Monday and hope the judge doesn't dismiss it. Chris is saying that he'll be there Monday, so we'll see what happens.
